Upbeat Panthers set sights on outright title

The UW-Milwaukee men's basketball team learned it had won it share of the Horizon League basketball title 10 days ago, early in its bus ride home from Indianapolis and a galling, 75-58 loss to Butler University.
From that moment on, the Panthers have been waiting for this day - and the Cleveland State Vikings - to arrive.
"We don't want to share this thing with anyone," said junior guard Ed McCants. "We want to close it out because we want that trophy all to ourselves."

University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee Men's Basketball
Cleveland State (4-23) at Wisconsin-Milwaukee (17-9)
DATE & TIME: Saturday, February 28th, 8:00 p.m. (et).
FACTS & STATS: Site: Klotsche Center (5,000) -- Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Television: None. Home Record: Cleveland St. 2-11, Milwaukee 9-2. Away Record:
Cleveland St. 2-10, Milwaukee 7-7. Neutral Record: Cleveland St. 0-2,
Milwaukee 1-0. Conference Record: Cleveland St. 0-15, Milwaukee 12-3. Series
Record: Cleveland State leads, 11-9.
GAME NOTES: Two teams at opposite ends of the basketball spectrum in the
Horizon League take to the floor at the Klotsche Center this evening as the
Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers play host to the slumping Vikings of Cleveland
State.
The Panthers, who have split home games between this venue and U.S.
Cellular Arena this season, enter the contest 12-3 and atop the league
standings, already assured of at least a share of the regular season title
heading into the conference tournament next week. With a victory over the
Vikings tonight Milwaukee, 9-2 at home this season, takes the title outright
for the first time ever in the Horizon League. The Panthers have been in a bit
of a funk lately, recording their first three-game losing streak with an 83-76
setback to the Manhattan Jaspers a week ago as part of Bracket Buster
Saturday.
As for the Vikings, their streak is still intact, one that has them
displaying the longest losing streak in all of Division I basketball at 21 in
a row. On Thursday night the squad looked good early against Loyola-Chicago
but then fell apart down the stretch in a 70-59 setback. The last win for
Cleveland State, which joins Texas A&M as the only programs without victory so
far in their respectively leagues, was a December 13 decision over Norfolk
State by a final of 64-52. That win actually had the Vikings at 4-2 to start
the campaign.
Despite having such an awful season, the Vikings are still ahead
in the all-time series with Milwaukee, winning 11 and dropping eight coming
into this season. Obviously, without having won a single league game so far in
2003-04, Cleveland State bowed to the Panthers in the first meeting, 78-64,
back on January 22 in Ohio.

Cleveland State Wraps Up Regular Season At UW-Milwaukee

Cleveland State (4-23, 0-15) will attempt to play the role of the spoiler when it closes the 2003-04 regular season at UW-Milwaukee (17-9, 12-3) on Saturday, Feb. 28 beginning at 7 p.m. CST in Klotsche Center. The Panthers, who have already claimed at least a share of the Horizon League title and the top seed in next week's tournament, will need a win over CSU on Saturday to win the title outright. The task will be formidable as UW-Milwaukee is 9-2 at home this year and a near-capacity crowd is expected to be on hand for Senior Night.

PREVIEWING UW-MILWAUKEE: The Panthers have lived up to their advance billing, entering the final game of the regular season having claimed a share of the 2004 Horizon League title. Led by forward Dylan Page, the favorite to claim league player of the year honors, UW-Milwaukee won its first seven league games before slumping recently. Page, who leads the league with a 20.8 scoring average, has been hampered over the last couple of weeks by a sprained ankle. It is no coincidence that the Panthers have won just two of the their last six games, allowing the rest of the Horizon League to move within a game of the lead. Junior guard Ed McCants has been outstanding, averaging 17.3 points a game with a league-best 85 three-pointers. Sophomore Joah Tucker, a transfer from Bradley, is chipping in with 13.1 points a game.
