NIU forward decides to transfer to UWM By DAN MANOYAN dmanoyan@journalsentinel.com Posted: May 19, 2005 Paige Paulsen, the 2003 Mr. Basketball of South Dakota, will transfer to UW-Milwaukee from Northern Illinois in the fall semester.
Advertisement Paulsen, a 6-foot-7 forward, will sit out the 2005-'06 season under NCAA Division I transfer rules but will have two years of eligibility left starting with the 2006-'07 season. Paulsen averaged 7.5 points and 3.7 rebounds for the Huskies last season, starting seven games.
He missed the Huskies' final seven games after suffering a concussion Feb. 7.
"It was a personal decision," Paulsen said, referring to his decision to transfer. "I felt to get to the level I needed to play at, I needed to transfer because I didn't think I was progressing as much as I should have.
"It wasn't that I wasn't playing, I just wasn't playing as good as I thought I should have. I'm fine with coach (Rob) Judson. I'm not leaving there on bad terms."
Paulsen began shopping around for a new team after the season ended and visited UWM because of his association with new Panthers assistant coach Brian Bidlingmyer. Paulsen was originally recruited by Bidlingmyer for Lamar University out of high school, but asked to be released from his letter of intent after the Beaumont, Texas, school fired Mike Deane, the former Marquette coach.
"I knew Coach Bidlingmyer from recruiting me for Lamar, so I decided to visit UWM," Paulsen said. "I fell in love with the school and Coach (Rob) Jeter was awesome, so I decided it was the right thing to do."
Paulsen was a starter at Custer (S.D.) High School, from the time he was in the eighth grade. He averaged 24.5 points and 11.0 rebounds in his senior season and scored a school record 1,790 points overall.
Although Paulsen has been admitted to UWM, Panthers coaches are unable to comment on his transfer until after his letter of intent is signed.
