Don't forget that often-overlooked Adrian Tigert was runner-up to Mr. Basketball Devin Harris in 2001 and that Danny Weiss was the school's very first first-team all-state recruit in the Division 1 era. As for the five best players to have worn a UWM uniform since 1990, I'd have to say Marc Mitchell, Clay Tucker, Dylan Page, Ed McCants and Joah Tucker. The next five, I believe, would include Craig Greene, Shannon Smith, Michael Hughes, Von McDade and Chad Angeli, with A.T. making a strong push.

Was Dan Johnson (1993?) first-team all-state? For some reason I have it in my head that he was.

To clarify, Michael Hughes was first-team all-state Illinois at Peoria High School in 1989 before matriculating to Southeastern C.C. (Iowa) and Nebraska. I think you could make the case that either he, McDade (who transferred from Oklahoma State) or Ed (Ohio Division 4 Player of the Year) were the most accomplished recruits in the history of the program. Danny was the first first-team all-stater recruited directly out of high school.

Craig Greene was much better than Marc Mitchell IMO. I played hustle with Mitchell one time and actually scored once. Shannon Smith was only big because he was supposed to be a savior for Marquette, but transferred. He really didn't do a lot for the program. (he also didn't have anyone else on the team to help him like Greene, Mitchell, and Perrine) Keep in mind however that Smith came after Craig Greene and Marc Mitchell took UWM to a 23-4 record and our only win in Wisconsin since becoming Div. I. (a team that had Michael Finley and Tracy Webster and went on to make the NIT) There was some hype around the team at the time, not what it is now but...

So, get that thought out of your head pnthr97! haha

I respect your opinion that Craig is better than Marc, but to say "much better" is a pretty big stretch. Marc was invited to multiple NBA workouts (as was Craig) and played overseas for several years. Marc has the heart of a lion and can win games on sheer will and determination.........I still argue that Craig and Marc go hand in hand. Don't get me wrong, each are great individually, but put them together and they both become special players. And not to rain on your parade, but if Marc can score pretty good when he wants to. Per Marc, "you reach, I teach" ;D Shannon was in the top 10 (top 5 I believe) in scoring in the COUNTRY his Jr. year at UWM. I would say that is doing something for the program. Also, keep in mind that when Craig, Marc, Ray, Mark Briggs, Tim, Eugene, etc. were playing (specifically in 92-93, the year they went 23-4), they were not in a conference and were playing an ENTIRELY different kind of schedule than we play today. Would they have won games in a conference, sure, but being an independent caused more of a, dare I say it, a Marquette type schedule.

I was joking about Greene being much better, trying moreso to brag about getting a point against Mitchell. Mitchell was a heckuva player on that team and I know he went over to Europe to play for a stretch.
Shannon had no help if I remember correctly. (granted, I've had a LOT of beers since that time) Being a top 10 scorer on a .500 team did nothing to help UWM move forward IMO--do you also think McDade helped move the program forward by being ranked in the top 20 in scoring? (by playing in the NBA perhaps) I believe he was banged up his senior year as well.
I believe the 92-93 team did receive votes in the poll however, whether the schedule blew (which it did for the most part) or not.

I think that if you are talking most hyped recruit, Including guys who opted out, Anthony Passley would have to be it. Just edging out Childress. If you look back on the board people thought he was gonna be the next Clay Tucker.
GO PANTHERS
