Before their opening-round NIT game with Rice on Wednesday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena, coach Bruce Pearl told his UW-Milwaukee team that the Owls were the superior team.
The Panthers pummeled the Owls mercilessly, 91-63. For a team that somehow won 22 games during the season, Rice appeared to be its own special version of the motionless offense and the ozone defense most of the evening.
The Panthers advance to the first round of the NIT, where Boise State, an 84-69 winner over UNLV, awaits Saturday at the Idaho Center in Nampa, Idaho. Should UWM, which improved to 20-10, win that game, a matchup with Marquette at the Bradley Center would be next.

MILWAUKEE - Dylan Page scored 22 points, Ed McCants added 21 and Joah Tucker had 14 Wednesday night as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee rolled past Rice 91-63 in the opening round of the NIT.
It was the first win ever for Milwaukee (20-10) in a Division I postseason tournament. They will play the winner Boise State in the next round, though a site and date has not yet been determined.
The Panthers, making their debut in the NIT after going to the NCAA tournament for the first time last season, rebounded nicely from back-to-back sub-40 percent shooting nights by shooting 56.9 percent from the field. UWM also got 24 points from its bench and had only one player (Page) play 30 minutes.

Rice victimized by costly lapses
Loss bounces Owls from NITBy ROB REISCHEL
Special to the Chronicle
MILWAUKEE -- Subpar shooting. Shoddy defense. And an absolutely brutal 12-minute stretch of basketball.
The Rice Owls might have been able to survive one of those nasty variables Wednesday night. But certainly not all three.
In a National Invitation Tournament game against host Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Owls shot just 36.6 percent from the floor, allowed the Panthers to shoot 59.4 percent and were outscored 34-9 over a 12-minute span.
