Cordell Passley, a 6-foot-3 freshman guard from Indianapolis Pike, has committed to Tennessee, according to a sources close to the Volunteer program. Passley was the lone eighth-grader to play in the Nike All-American Camp this past summer in July and will play in the event again this season. He is the younger brother of Anthony Passley, who committed to Wisconsin-Milwaukee out of high school. The Panthers were coached by Bruce Pearl, who is now at Tennessee along with standout recruiter Tony Jones.

He will be getting his older brother soon...They are trying to appeal his status so that he will not have to sit out a year.

I think that is stupid..recruting an eight grader...seems like a bit of a stretch...maybe get him a new bike and a snickers bar to win him over kentucky

I think offering a college scholarship to an 8th grader may be a bit much, but "recruiting" one may not be a bad idea. If I remember my NCAA rules correctly (which I may or may not) schools may not give anything of value to high school students.
I don't think that is the case with grade schoolers. For instance, most DI schools run summer camps. If their high school recruits want to come, they have to pay the same fees as other campers, or else they are violating NCAA rules. Middle school students, on the other hand, can be given "scholarships" to attend camps free of charge.
This can build goodwill with a potential recruit early on. Of course, these days usually the person who was coaching at a school when a kid was in 8th grade is long gone by the time the kid is a senior, so it may not really do any good.

I agree rQ. Announcing that young Passley will be going to TN was more of a public relations bit than anything else, due to the fact that BP has had more strikes than hits since taking the job down there. He had to produce something - the natives were (and are) getting restless.

In fact, you might say he's taken more strikes than Geoff Jenkins.
