It’s the fact he literally doesn’t try at all on defense. This has been true at times, it was not true last night.

How is the team with BJ against peer competition only 3-8 versus 4-3 without? Any rationale explanation will be appreciated. Thanks. Here is a response I received from a non-message board poster: BJ driving to the basket good! BJ popping 3's bad.Him shooting too many threes takes the ball out of the hands of our inside scoring and makes our offense easier to defend because we are more one dimensional. Verses Cleveland State 4 double digit scorers. Verses NKU 2 double digit scorers. Both shooters Pratt and BJ. If Lundy can make some adjustments and maybe we, BJ and everyone else can learn to live with it. Let's make him more on the plus side then he is. One other thing. Learic Davis: without BJ vs. CSU career high in minutes played in a game. 11 points! Vs. NKU 6 minutes and 0 points. So you can argue BJ kinda ruins the development of our underclassman. But you know what they say : Big trees block out the sun for the sapplings.

I would say that B.J. is one of the five or six most prolific offensive players in the Horizon League. Of those five or six, he's certainly among the two or three highest-usage. For a variety of reasons, some beyond his control, he dominates the ball. I said at a recent game, "You know that he'll get his 20," and without missing a beat, my buddy added, unsolicited, "shots."

Marques Warrick is another high-usage player who's not terribly efficient.

There is no one on this roster that has proven they can take over a game, other than BJ. There is no one that can, or has, put the team on his shoulders, like BJ. We often bemoan the fact we have no point guard, yet BJ is easily the best creator on the offensive side of the ball. When he's driving and dishing, we are typically a good, efficient offense.
Who has the highest 3 point percentage on our team of the major scoring contributors? Who is the leading rebounder per game? (our big men would take this if it were per minute played, as to be expected) Who has the most assists on our team? He's also right there near the top in steals per minute played, along with KP.
Yes, he turns the ball over at a horrible rate, but to say the team would be better without him is a serious misunderstanding of everything else he brings to the team.
And yes, his defense leaves something to be desired, but this team has played solid defense over the last few games by playing a zone and for the most part, covering up for individual defensive deficiencies. (chalk this up to good coaching) In the last eight games, (of which BJ has played in seven) only two teams have shot better than 40% against us - NKU (41%) and Robert Morris (43%). Everyone else was below 40%. When BJ was hurt earlier, we went 3-3 and the team played defense just as horribly with him as they did without him.
High usage? Takes too many shots? In shooting percentage, he's a "whopping" .023 behind the leading guard, KP and .017 behind the second leading guard Pratt for guards that see significant playing time. That means, assuming he takes another 100 shots in the remaining games, he'll miss a mere 2.3 more shots than if KP taken them, or 1.7 shots had Pratt taken them. If you'd rather rely on the inside game, then you need a new head coach along with a new offensive strategy - not a team sans BJ. (our four guards lead the team in attempts, and EJ is last among them, while still taking almost 100 more attempts than the first big man in Fields)
There are claims that BJ is potentially impacting the development of incoming players because Learic had one good game without BJ on the court and a ho-hum game the next night when BJ played. There's no consideration of the fact people are hot one night and cool off the next, or that defensive matchups may play a factor? Talk about sample size abuse. In Learic's four highest scoring and "best games" BJ has played in two of them. Learic's development is most certainly not being negatively impacted by BJ being on the court - at least not statistically.

I just rewatched the game. We were certainly lucky the last minute or so.
My other takeaway is Larivee is terrible. It's time to find someone that does the work. I had enough "Langston Davis" and "Learic Wilson". This was my first home game I've rewatched all year. It was bad. Joah was good though.

Not many have taken a stab at it yet. Again, it is not a rhetorical question. It is an actual one in search of legitimate answers to a fascinating and seemingly controversial issue on here. The sample size is 7 and 11 games, respectfully: Why is the team 4-3 against peer competition without BJ and only 3-8 with?

It was bad. Joah was good though. I agree. Larivee is even more difficult to listen to when working alone, which is most of the time. I'll state this again for future consideration - Forget separate audio for ESPN+ home games. Simulcast the radio audio every home game. Use the cost savings to enhance the simulcast, like a color analyst to work with Warras, an extra camera, a couple of over-the-air games, etc. Cleveland State and Wright State are among HL programs that do this very well.

It’s the fact he literally doesn’t try at all on defense. This has been true at times, it was not true last night. Effort based defensive lapses should have been an instant sit much much earlier this season. I also think the ot loss at home when we let bj run the show after sitting most of the second half woulda been the game to just sit freeman the rest of the game. I still prefer how the offense flows with Pratt running it. Freeman tends to hold the ball too long and sometimes won’t make a pass that might lead to a hockey assist for himself and hold for an actual assist. For a guy who likely has pro aspirations these are things you can’t do. Gotta bring it every single night and gotta play team ball.
