My husband and I went to BU v UC Davis game. He's a Bucknell alum and BU and Bucknell are both Patriot League teams. Plus we have a good friend who got his law degree from BU and whose partner recently died. We wanted to tell him we rooted for his alma mater. BU was down by 33 or so. We began making noise when UC Davis went to the line. We weren't mean, didn't say anything obscene or cut on the players. We would cough loudly or sneeze or start singing. This was quite effective as the Davis players started missing 80% of their Free Throws. The BU fans loved it Suddenly we were confronted by a UWM staffer. We were told to stop. Which we did. About 5 minutes later the Assistant AD for Communications and Marketing came up for over kill. He told us "if you want to blame someone blame me." He went on to say "This is a bad look for Milwaukee Basketball. To me a bad look is telling fans they can't help the team they're rooting for. Especially when fans of that school hear you do it. Are we going to tell our student rooting sections not to try and distract our opponents? I could have understood if we were obscene or yelling insults. We werent. So I guess we will stay quiet during opponent free throws from now on.

I just assumed there were allergens in the air when UCD was shooting free throws in the second half.

If this is true, the Assistant AD for Communications and Marketing should resign or be fired.

If this is true, the Assistant AD for Communications and Marketing should resign or be fired. I don't think this rises to that level but it was wrong. I literally saved the Athletic Program back in the 70's when everyone wanted to cut the measly $7.00 of the Segregated Fee that went to Athletics. We took over the Student Government and then the Segregated Fee Committee to keep it, so I've been a Panther Fan for over 50 years. In all that time I never thought a UWM staffer would tell me not to do what I could to help a team I'm rooting for. At tonight's game as usual the announcer told the crowd to make noise when SEMO was at the Free Throw line. That's all we were doing. The fact that UWM wasn't playing at the time shouldn't have mattered.

I wouldn't put it past a fan from another school to lie about what you guys were doing.
Kenny and I moved to the other side of the gym tonight in part because there were old people who were turning around and clutching their pearls at us just for being loud and supportive of the team. Meanwhile Julius is sitting with us and he has zero problem with anything we're saying.
If these people don't want to stand and cheer, that's fine. They can sit and pretend they're at an interpretive dance recital. But I'm getting really tired of being made to feel like I'm out of line when I'm literally just being loud and positive. It's a damn college basketball game.

Hi. It was me. Let me set the record straight, please. If the people making the noise had BU/red shirts on ... ANYTHING besides UWM gear ... I wouldn't have said a thing.
The fact that it was pretty much only two people (at least the very loud ones), front and center in a very empty section, who were ... well let's see ... making loud animal noises, being the only voice in a semi-quiet gym while the free throws were being attempted ... getting numerous looks from the UC Davis bench and coach time and time again ... while prominently sitting in very visible UWM gear ... that was why I felt it was a very "bad look for UWM" as they were essentially representing MKE at the time in my opinion.
I then came over at the timeout later because the two then went on to yell "we were told to be quiet" to everyone around them at every proceeding free throw. I could hear it with my headset on. I didn't say anything about "blame me". I said if you wanted to talk to someone about it after the game, you can talk to me. You still can. Chris Zills czills@uwm.edu or 414-750-2090.
Get loud all you want when it's your opponent. This wasn't about that. This was about this particular situation. I am here if anyone wants to discuss.

Hey I was at the game I saw you guys that was hilarious. Except I had UCD -2.5 and nearly had the worst beat of my LIFE😂😂😂 the Boston bench was loving it too lol. BU went 0-3 this weekend. Y’all were probably the highlight of the weekend for those kids.

I'm not going to bother going point by point over your post. I will however, say mostly sneezed, but sometimes coughed, sang "Sweet Caroline" and yelled "Miss it." We didn't swear, taunt or do or say anything that would disrespect a player. Nor did we persist after ONE TIME loudly telling the BU fans that we'd been told to stop. After that we said little or NOTHING during subsequent free throws. We were fans not staff, not players, not faculty but FANS. I'm not surprised that the UC Davis people didn't like it However, I seriously doubt that anyone saw us as representatives of anything or anyone other than ourselves. We had EVERY right to make noise to support the team we wanted to see win the game. You seemed to have been the only person there who felt otherwise. And that's not a good look for UWM Basketball.

Yes, you had every right. You are correct.
But if you feel that two grown adults making very loud random noises, in a relatively quiet arena while kids shoot free throws in a neutral-site game for a stretch of many, many free throw attempts, while visibly bringing attention to yourselves by coaches and staff members (of a playing team) within 25 feet of you, while essentially sitting by yourselves mid-court prominently wearing UWM apparel is not a bad look for UWM, then we will never be able to see eye-to-eye on this one.
And again, it was situation. If you had BU shirts on, it is what it is.
Come on back Saturday. Be as loud as you want. This is a fun team and it's going to be a great year.

Two people in a empty section making noise. What the other sections studying? I would think staff would go to sections that had people and tell them to make noise because two people are making them look bad.

It sounds like milwsport did have a rooting interest in the game. It was a better reason for cheering for Boston U than my reasons for cheering for Boston U at that game (wanting the underdog to win and wanting a competitive game… seeing as Boston U was down by well over 20 points in the second half, the only way to cheer for a competitive game was to cheer for BU.
I can understand not wanting the university to look bad, and the pressures you were under to ensure that. I know that job can’t be easy. But I was there, and didn’t think it was anything more than trying to give BU a slight home court advantage because milwsport wanted BU to win. There was nothing offensive about what he was doing. There was no taunting or vulgarity or anything like that. I thought it was amusing. Heck, I thought it was coming from somebody wearing BU gear.
The one argument I can’t get behind is the one that they are “kids” out there shooting free throws. If the fact that the players are young college students is the reason we shouldn’t make noise during free throws, then why would it matter whether it’s a neutral site team or a road team? If it’s mean spirited to make noise when a college student is shooting free throws, why are we encouraged to do so when UWM’s opponent is shooting free throws? Aren’t those opponents “kids” too?
I guess I just don’t see what the problem was. If they were teasing a player out there, that would be a problem. They weren’t. They were just making generic noises when the team they were not cheering for was shooting free throws. Something we are encouraged to do when it’s UWM’s opponent shooting free throws. Their coughing/sneezing/singing was a fraction of the distraction of the distraction the band alone gives UWM’s opponents at home games.
I don’t want to start a huge argument here, and I respect most of the work you do with the department. I just disagree with your assessment here. And I know this won’t come up again until Milwaukee hosts another MTE (or the Horizon League tournament goes back to the site of the highest seed… hey, a man can dream!).
Either way, I suppose what’s done is done and all of the rest of the games in Milwaukee will include Milwaukee. We will just have to respectfully agree to disagree. Go Panthers!
