Hold it! Did Bart expressly state that we have two scholarships left or did Todd insert that parenthetically. Perhaps with all the comings and goings, he lost track? The quote from the article is: "We're hustling," Lundy said. "We're hustling hard, trying to fill these two (spots)." There were tweets from last November that said we had offered Diew. I would think that means on scholarship. I guess it could have been a walk on offer, but usually you see those indicated as such.

Wouldn't shock me to see Zach Howell on scholarship. Not to hate on the guy, but he didn't exactly earn that from his play last year. I would be shocked Zach seems like a hard worker and a guy Lundy likes quite a bit. He got way more time last year than I was expecting. It's not out of the realm of possibility for a coach to reward his players with a scholarship if there is one available or budgeted for.

If I remember right, we originally offered and signed Diew when there were 0 scholarships remaining. I’m not sure how this all works, but I think this may be the reason we thought he was a walk on.

I won’t speak to whether Zach “deserves” a scholarship, but I don’t think any of us know what was promised to Zach when he was recruited. It’s possible that he has earned a scholarship for 2023. Until that is confirmed by one of the coaches or someone here has good intel, I’ll leave him as a non-scholarship player in the Scholarship Table.
Diew could be on a similar agreement with the staff. It’s unclear. But I do remember reading a JS article that stated Diew would walk-on for 2023.

So when Wisconsin signed Gus Yalden (top 150) this year with no open scholarships was he considered a walkon?

I can't find it yet, I thought I saw last year Howell was going to be a walk-on only for 2022-23 season.

I can't find it yet, I thought I saw last year Howell was going to be a walk-on only for 2022-23 season. In this article ( link) it says: "Howell had a scholarship offer from Texas Tech last summer, underscoring his physical ability. He will be a walk-on his first year at UWM." It doesn't explicitly say anything about his status beyond the first year, but that does sound like he might be on scholarship now.

I was just looking for the same article. There are some real gems from Lundy in that piece by Todd. “When I was at Marquette, we played Jimmy (Butler) and Jae (Crowder) at the 4 and 5, so I do think, in my opinion, height is very overrated,” he said. “We needed shooting, we needed speed, we needed guys that could switch a little bit.
“So, we’ve got that.”
Edwards, a Houston native, was a top-100 recruit coming out of high school. He enrolled early at DePaul and played five games in the 2020-21 season before transferring to Nebraska, where he played 19 games last season with five starts.
“He’s the most well-known (in our recruiting class). I don’t know that he’s proven anything yet,” Lundy said. “He just needs stability, needs somebody to put their arm around him and say, ‘Hey, you can play through some mistakes.’
“He’s got some big upside. He’s a versatile shooter. He’s got deep range, but he’s really athletic. Long, rangy — he’s just scratching the surface on what he can be.”
Over the long haul, Freeman might turn out to be the best of the bunch after playing as a freshman at Dodge City (Kansas) Community College.
“B.J. Freeman may end up being the crown jewel,” Lundy said. “He’s really talented. I’ve known him since high school. North Carolina kid. Can really shoot it, switchable, can play 2 through 4. Sky’s the limit on how good he can be.”
Johnson averaged 11.9 points and 5.5 rebounds in three seasons at Alabama A&M. Last year he posted 17 games of 15 points or more, including a career-high 30 at Cincinnati, as well as seven double-doubles.
The Panthers’ new backcourt will be relatively inexperienced but should be able to shoot it. Ratliffe played the last three seasons at Division II UNC-Pembroke
“Angelo and Jordan Ratliffe are, really, small 2s," Lundy said. "They’re both really experienced, and they can really shoot. Then, we have the two freshman point guards, Elijah and Brian.
"Justin Thomas is a swing guy who’s 6-7 but can really play 1 through 4. He’s really important to us because he can play a lot of different positions.”
Howell had a scholarship offer from Texas Tech last summer, underscoring his physical ability. He will be a walk-on his first year at UWM.
The last piece of the puzzle, Lundy said, is landing a transfer point guard.
"A guy that’s actually been a point guard and played in college," he said. "We could move Justin over if we need to. But somebody that identifies himself as a point guard. That’s been the hardest position to get, that transfer point.
"I think my staff would say I’m picky. I want a guy that can turn the ball over in the backcourt, that can get after the ball full court and can really run the ball down the floor offensively but also run the team and shoot.
"The way I break a roster down is I want a roster that can make 300 threes in a year. We’re a little short of that right now. So, a point guard than can make some threes would help put us over the top."

Murchison will join the Panthers this season as a preferred walk-on with the potential to earn a scholarship. I said couple of weeks ago I can't find the article that Zach Howell will be on scholarship after his freshman season.
