Just looking at the openings that are left. Is it possible McCollum could be hired at Cleveland State?? Would be quite an interesting turn of events. They were paying Gates pretty well ($550K per year) so I wouldn’t be surprised.
Not many options for him left at the D1 level at this point if he’s looking to make the move. I was surprised he wasn’t more highly sought after with all the love he was getting from everyone.

Of the coaches that I've kept in touch with (the 20 or so guys who I talk to any time we have an opening and then on holidays, occasional catch-ups etc) who know McCollum personally (7-8 IIRC I'm not going back through my texts), most of them told me that he is extremely choosy with who he even interviews with. One of them said it was a good sign for Milwaukee that he was willing to interview with us. And when he does interview, he asks that they keep his name quiet as long as they can out of respect to NW Missouri State. That's classy. The same guy had said that while his contract doesn't say it, he essentially has the same lifetime deal that Lundy had mentioned Queens offering him. If you've got that kind of job security, where you know you can go years without winning much and still keep your job, you'd be reticent to go somewhere else too. Now, it's clear that CSU is willing to spend more on their head coach than we are. Jeter made the most at ~$451k, while CSU has paid both Gary Waters and Dennis Gates $500k to coach. We know from what Bradley offered Rob that they were willing to spend $700k on a new coach in 2011, so I'm guessing the MVC is probably a hop, skip and a jump further than $500k for most of their jobs. If I were McCollum, though, the money wouldn't be enough to get me to CSU if they were willing to pay $500k right away. Lots of good teams get decimated by the transfer portal when their coach leaves, but CSU is losing its top six scorers to graduation and seven of its top nine. Doesn't look like they're going to lose Jayson Woodrich or Deshon Parker to the portal, but it's still a very thin cupboard behind them and they combined for 9 ppg, 4 rpg and 3 apg per game. McCollum now has four national titles, second in D-II history. He is literally the Division II Coach K. If it weren't for COVID-19, he might have five out of the last six national titles. Instead it's four of the last five. And he turns 41 next week. When he gets to Division I my expectation is that he will go somewhere that has a roster ready to win immediately and already has demonstrated long-term success so he can hit the ground running. When you've got four national titles it's a lot easier to pick your spots.

Every time I see Roger Powell I get a twitch of anger over 2005.
