Pantherdon, I admire your passion for our Panthers. Please realize that most us (especially those of us over 35 or so) grew up as Badger fans. Sure you were glad UWM won if you could find the two paragraph article in the paper, but for the most part, they weren't on the radar screen. Does that mean we aren't Panther fans now? Hell no.
But it also doesn't mean we can't root for the Badgers FB team when we don't have one. I agree that if the crowd at the Club games gets to be sizeable we might have a shot at restorin FB. But realistically that would have to be a really big crowd (10 to 15,000) to convince the powers that be to invest the money.
Don't get me wrong. I'd love too see a UWM D-1AA team. I fought like hell to keep our team when we had one. But, FB is expensive. That's why only a handful of schools, who dropped it, ever brought it back.

It is totally reasonable to be a football fan of any collegiate program given our circumstance with that sport, but I also hope people realize that being a Panther fan, in the truest sense, means that you support, and hopefully on occasion (at least) watch, all Panther teams - not just one. . .that said, enjoy the Badger game Kroener, nothing wrong with that.

I'm with Kroener here.
We're UWM students and big time fans at their games, but you have to remember that we grew up in Badger Country.
I love the Badgers, but that doesn't mean I am a bad Panther fan. I love UWM, and I've always been a fan of their sports since I was a young laddie. Call me a B-anther. Or a P-adger.
Whatever the case, all I have to say is one thing.
F--- Marquette.

Other than the arrogance of their fans and students, I actually really like Marquette's teams--except the soccer team, of course.

I think since many Panther fans grew up as Badger fans they don't see the issue. Maybe one day a new generation of Panther fans won't grow up as Badger fans and everyone can hate UW together. Too bad it won't happen in our lifetimes, but I can always dream.

As long as the University of Wisconsin-Madison has the football team, and is the top school in academics--and trust me, with their proposed new admissions policy UWM is NOT going in the right direction--they will always be the flagship university in the state.

as a member of the football team I'll tell you that we would love to have your support at the game however as a sports fan I'd tell you that the soccer game has more tradition behind it. then again the football team is starting a new tradition and wouldn't it be great to say you were a part of something when it first started. plus the football games so far this year have been very exciting and close down to the last second. so on an excitement level go to the football game it's not like its hours away or anything.
also for anyone who doesn't know that there is a UWM club football game this Sunday at noon at Carrol college. now you know and have been invited to come.

who cares??? the badger game is on saturday and jimmy needs plans for sunday.... technically there should be no argument here... but jimmy... go support the soccer team... they are a true d1 program (sorry nate) and they deserve our support for the fact that they have been pretty darn good the last few years... and yes... this is coming from a former football player

I just had to point this out. According the Journal's Big 10 and UW blog after Saturday's game:
"Joe Thomas asked for a game ball - and received it - to give to the parents of Luke Homan, his friend from Brookfield who drowned this past week."
It's hard not to root for people who are that thoughtful.
PS: Three UW FB players joined the search for Luke before his body was found. All of them played FB with him in High School.

uwmfutbol,
What exactly do you know about UWM's admission policies? How are they not a good thing? How does that pertain to supplanting UW as the flagship university?

UW-Madison accepts students in the range of 3.5-3.8 gpa with an average ACT score of 28--this primarily because it's considered the top academic/research university in the state.
UWM's average ACT score is a 22 (along with the rest of the UW system except UWLAX having 24 I believe), but allows students in with an ACT score of 16 or 17, and must be in the top 50% of their class. Last week UWM's chancellor announced that they wished to eliminate the minimum requirement of admission to the unversity to allow for a more diverse enrollment which looks at things other than grades.
While that is fine to a certain degree, what it means is that UWM, rather than taking advantage of its recent popularity and raising its academic standards, are going to actually make it easier to get in the university. I may be biased, but that's mostly because I turned down Madison with a 3.6 GPA and 26 ACT and would like to see UWM raise its academics. Students who graduate in the top 10-20% want to go to a university known for bringing in top students... UWM does not have such a reputation.
In terms of academics, UWM and Madison are the only universities in Wisconsin that are National Universities--aka research and phD programs. Madison is #34 on Top Universities, UWM is tier 4. As a current student I would rather see us cut enrollment and make it more difficult to get in, raising academic standards and making classrooms smaller.... I have 3 classes that are COMPLETELY full this semester.
Unfortunately, everyone knows that the more students we have, the more money the University brings in, thus there is no simple solution.
As long as UW Madison has the reputation and the funding, they'll be the top university. It'll take decades for UWM to get to that point, if ever.

Just to add to my own comment, though, things have REALLY changed at UWM in the last 50 years. My dad got his MA at UWM and said he could not believe how much the university had changed since he went there. This of course resulted due to numerous factors: good leadership, community involvement, growth of athletics--UWM's enrollment shot up after we got to the NCAA tourney for the first time--and of course, a developing research. In the last 5 or so years UWM has had great luck with research and funding due to alumni support. The school has had a LOT of donations in the past few years.
Thus, the university as a whole is going in the right direction--I would simply like to see them take it one step further. It'll be interesting to see how different this university is in 50 years.

Eventually, they'll have to limit the enrollment and then the requirements will rise.
