Tonight I took a 75 year old friend to the Brewer's Game. It was a great game, won by the Brew Crew with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Because my friend has a hard time getting around, we took a bus to Miller Park so he wouldn't have to walk a mile or so from a space in the lot. On the bus going back I ran into something I really liked.
It was a group of UWM students including an athlete. They were sitting up front and all decked out in Panther wear. That's something you never would have seen when I was a student. Hell I don't think we even had any because no one would have bought it anyway.
They readily offered their seats to us so my friend could sit down.
As the trip went on I grew more and more impressed.
Their choice of clothing, their manners, the fact that they weren't drunk or obnoxious and the conversation about classes, how expensive books were and how proud they were to be at UWM.They were all excited about last week's soccer game as well.
One of them beamed as he told me that he is a UWM athlete, a swimmer. His name is Sam Parent. He was excited about an all athlete and coaches meeting held today. He said Bud told them all that we would win the Mc Caffery trophy again this year. He thinks the new Swim coach is excellent too.
I was pretty impressed with him and then when I read his bio I was even more impressed. Here's a link to it: uwmpanthers.cstv.com/sports/m-swim/mtt/parent_sam00.html
He never mentioned all or even any of his accomplishments. He talked about his sister being an RA at Marquette and his major in business. How lucky he was to get a dorm room, how pleased he was to be on the swim team and how he really likes his coach. He was really happy to have shaken RJ's hand at the meeting today.
I guess when we read so much lately about athletes not behaving themselves, or talking like they are all that, I just thought I'd mention how I felt when I got off the bus. Really proud and pleased that we have athletes like Sam and students like the rest of them.
I've never been to a swim meet but I think I might go to one this year just to see this guy. If he's half as impressive in the water as he is in person, we just might have an All American in the pool.
