Milwaukee Releases 2006-07 Women's Basketball Schedule
Six teams from 2006 postseason highlight upcoming slate
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Sept. 6, 2006) - Five non-league games against teams that made the postseason last year, including a home date with crosstown rival Marquette, highlight the 2006-07 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball schedule, released today by head coach Sandy Botham.
Marquette makes the short trip across town Nov. 29 for a Wednesday night game at the Klotsche Center. Last season, the Golden Eagles finished 18-10 in their first season in the Big East, qualifying for the WNIT and advancing to the championship game.
Botham and the Panthers will kick off the regular season Nov. 10 at South Florida, which made the NCAA Tournament last season. UWM then plays road contests at Miami (Nov. 13) and Drake (Nov. 17) before opening the home portion of its schedule Nov. 19 with Central Connecticut State and traveling to Madison to take on Wisconsin Nov. 20, the last of three games in four days. Both the Hurricanes and Bulldogs made the WNIT last season, with UM advancing to the second round. Milwaukee is also on the road to take on WNIT qualifier Iowa State Dec. 2 in Ames, Iowa.
"We've been able to put together a strong non-conference schedule with postseason experience. Miami, USF, Marquette, Iowa State all made the postseason and are perennial threats to do it year in and year out," Botham said. "Our goals every year are winning a league championship and making it to the NCAA Tournament. Our non-conference opponents have always been those teams with similar goals that raise the bar for themselves. It is also good to see some new teams from out of our region that we haven't played."
The month of November comes to a close with an appearance in SMU's tournament, alongside San Jose State and Bradley, over Thanksgiving and the home date with Marquette. At SMU, the Panthers will open the tournament with SJSU Friday, Nov. 24. The winner will then take on the winner of SMU/Bradley on Saturday.
The month of December kicks off with UWM on the road at Iowa State, before returning home to host Air Force Dec. 7. A road game at North Dakota State Dec. 10, a home matchup with Chicago State Dec. 13 and an afternoon contest at LaSalle Dec. 23 in Philadephia round out the non-league schedule.
"This schedule should have us ready when the league season comes. Our philosophy has always been to make sure our players are challenged, prepared and know what it takes at the next level," Botham said. "Looking back a year, our non-conference record was below .500 and we started slow in league play. But, we were able to put things together and we won 12-straight games and made the NCAA Tournament."
Just before the new year, Milwaukee opens Horizon League play with home games with Loyola Dec. 28 and UIC Dec. 30. The Panthers met both Chicago schools in last season's league tournament, topping the Flames, 71-63, in the championship game.
UWM starts out 2007 with just two games before Youngstown State (Jan. 18) and Cleveland State (Jan. 20) come to the Klotsche Center for the team's only home games of the month. The Panthers head to Green Bay, Wis., Jan. 13 in one of their biggest league games of the season. Milwaukee and UWGB have finished first and second in the league standings every season since 1999-00. Last season, the Phoenix finished second to UWM, but qualified for the WNIT and finished 23-6 on the year.
The Panthers' league season draws to a close in Chicago this season, with UWM playing at UIC March 1 and Loyola March 3. The Horizon League Tournament then gets underway with a first round game March 5 and the quarterfinals March 7, both rounds played on campus sites. The remainder of the tournament will then be played at the highest remaining seed March 9 and 11.
Milwaukee is coming off its best season in the program's Division I history, breaking a school record with 22 wins, including 12-straight. UWM also won the league's regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history. Botham returns three starters and 11 letterwinners, including Horizon League Newcomer of the Year and all-league first-team member Traci Edwards and Meredith Onson, who started 27 games and was named to the all-newcomer team.
