MEN'S SOCCER SHUTS OUT MARQUETTE IN HOME OPENER 2-0
Okoampa strikes in the first minute; Basty notches two assists against instate foe
GREEN BAY, Wis. - The UW-Green Bay men's soccer team (2-2-0) took advantage of its opportunities, including a key chance just 42 seconds into the game as the Phoenix defeated instate rival Marquette Tuesday evening at Santaga Stadium. Senior forward Joshua Okoampa tallied his third goal of the season with the first shot of the game while sophomore Tosaint Ricketts added an insurance goal in the 35th minute. Freshman Francois Basty assisted on both Phoenix scores.
After stopping the Golden Eagles on the initial attack of the game, the Phoenix headed downfield and got behind Marquette's defense on the right side. There, Basty sent in a cross to Okoampa, who two-touched a shot past MU goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski for the 1-0 lead.
Marquette (1-2-1) just missed knotting the contest in the 20th minute on a Mike Klemm shot, but Phoenix defender Ray Hibbler blocked the shot on goal out of danger.
The Golden Eagles continued to pack their end of the field defensively, allowing UW-Green Bay to possess the ball but struggle to break through for shots. In the 30th minute, however, Marquette's Bryan Dahlquist was shown a red card after an incident with Phoenix midfielder David Znaty. Znaty left the match with a bloodied face and did not return.
With a man advantage, UW-Green Bay continued to possess the ball and find offensive opportunities. It didn't take long for the Phoenix to increase its lead, as the team jumped on a Marquette miscue. Off a flick by Okoampa, Basty was able to get past the Golden Eagles' back line when a defender misplayed the ball. Basty was one-on-one with Pyzdrowski, but the Marquette goalkeeper made the save. Ricketts was able to gather the ball on the right side and put home a 15-yard shot for the two-goal advantage.
For the game, UW-Green Bay out-shot Marquette 9-7, but had a 5-2 ledger in shots on goal. UW-Green Bay goalkeeper Josh Loyd made one save in the shutout, while Pyzdrowski tallied three saves.
Wisconsin-Green Bay returns to action Saturday, Sept. 9 when the squad kicks off Horizon League play at Cleveland State for a noon start.

Yet another non-conf win over a BCS conference opponent this season for the HL. It might not have been a quality win, but for UWGB it probably is. The League is looking really good overall this year. I'd be very disappointed if it doesn't finish in at least the top 8 or 9 in confernece RPI this season, after finishing in the 14-16 range regularly for many years now. The HL finished as the 13th rated conference last year, and it seems obvious the bottom-feeders that we seem to be lacking this year were really dragging the league down... www.soccerratings.com/M05C1.html
