Mark Mone, who has played a key role in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's nearly completed strategic planning, has been named interim chancellor and will take the helm at the end of May. Mone (pronounced mo-ne) will serve as interim chancellor until the UW System names a permanent successor to Michael Lovell, who stunned the campus a month ago when he announced he was leaving to become the first lay president of Marquette University in that school's 133-year history. Lovell initially had asked UW System President Ray Cross if he could remain at UWM until Aug. 1 to finish several key projects, including the university's strategic plan, and to work with his interim replacement to smooth the transition. Lovell instead will leave May 31 because Mone has been working closely with university stakeholders on UWM's 2020 Strategic Plan, Cross said Tuesday.
