Open on the road, close on the road. What this creates is a stretch where 8 of 12 games from January 9 thru February 22 will be at the Pantherererena. I like that.

Why the heck do we have a game at the KC when out name is on the damn MECCA? UWM Fall Commencement is at Panther Arena on Dec. 14th.

For the sixth time in the last seven seasons (2011 was the exception), the Panthers will play archrival Green Bay at home first.
Which means that our students will once again be on break for what would otherwise be our biggest draw of the year ... outside of the Badgers, of course.

I would love to know what other HL schools' fans think of their scheduling. The Green Bay game during student break issue has been so aggravating for so long that there are times I wonder whether the HL actually wants us to have fans at our games. And let's not even start about having league games on Monday nights or Sunday afternoons during football season. By the way, I quickly glanced at the MU schedule and thought I saw at least three dates when we will both have home games the same day/evening. There's not much we can do about that in scheduling but it's unfortunate. After the Bucks move and the state tears down the BC rather than pay for maintaining it the problem will solve itself since the GEs will have to pick after us for dates at the Panther Arena.

Green Bay fans hate it. We only get 1 conference Saturday home game all year. Our rivalry game with you at home isn't even on a weekend. Clueless.

Clueless. That's it! John LeCrone is just a pseudonym. Our conference commissioner is actually Cher Horowitz!

I get the feeling that would last about 2 seasons max. It wouldn't take them long to raise the funds for their own arena. Still, would be fun while it lasted.

I would love to know what other HL schools' fans think of their scheduling. The Green Bay game during student break issue has been so aggravating for so long that there are times I wonder whether the HL actually wants us to have fans at our games. We all know the answer to this little question. And it's especially bizarre because MKE's TV market is so substantial and the arena sits so many. But ever since Bo, we have always been the thorn in the side of the league darlings, with the exception of the couple of years when it was obviously Valpo and we were average-to-bad. UWM beating UWGB and making the tournament last season was the best thing that could have happened to the league, because it gives the league a meaningful rivalry for the first time since Butler and UWM traded jabs without diminishing Keifer Sykes' star, which can only be a huge economic boon for the league -- not only will there be two Horizon League schools in the spotlight next year, there will be an intense rivalry between them. But all the league will do is try to marginalize UWM because they want UWGB to succeed so badly.

The League also does a horrible job 'telling the story' of teams in the league. When ESPN comes in to do games, they often have to hunt a little bit for a narrative; if the league's media relations were to define an identity for contending teams, ESPN games would be a lot more engaging for casual fans and people who may not be familiar with the H-League.
Green Bay's games will be fine because it'll just be talking about Sykes. For our games, it'll be about the postseason ban. But when we play each other on ESPNU, are they going to have a breakdown of the storied history of this rivalry, the early-1990's dogfight, then 8 years of GB dominance, 6 years of MKE with the upper hand, and a back and forth slugfest mostly for the past bunch of years? Where's the narrative to pull people in? I'm interested in looking at all that.

In terms of narratives, one would have thought from the commentary that last year's tournament quarterfinal was a victory parade for Valpo.

Back to the non-con schedule for a bit. What has made our home non-con scheduling so challenging is that we now have two extra slots to fill with the league at only 9 teams and with the demise of the Bracketbuster. That was two ready-made home games a year -- against comparable teams -- that we now have to fill. And the college hoops world is now in a "buy game" mentality where even mid-majors, including some in our conference, are paying for games. Low majors are now asking what we will pay them. Um, dinner? Hello Minnesota-Crookston and Concordia-St. Paul. I don't see this changing soon but it would help enormously if the conference would grow to 10 or preferably 12 teams.
On the good news side I have been told that Montana is a home-and-home, so there will be a trip to Missoula down the road. Also, the Wisconsin contract is down to its last two games, which are effectively a home-and-home agreement. It will be interesting to see how it gets renewed. Say what you will about how that agreement has been structured but the other high major in the state won't even play us.
