UWM Women's Soccer Releases 2005 Schedule
MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team will play four Big Ten schools, six teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season head coach Michael Moynihan announced today when he released the team's 2005 schedule.
The Panthers are scheduled to play on 11 non-league games, including 10 against teams with winning records last season and nine that won at least 10 games.
"We have put together a schedule that I believe is as tough as any conference schedule," Moynihan said. "We play four teams from the Big 10, including Illinois which made the NCAA Elite Eight last year, and Florida which is from another big conference."
UWM opens its season with the Milwaukee Cup for the sixth-straight season against an NCAA Elite Eight team in Illinois (16-6-2 in 2004), Aug. 26, at Marquette's Valley Field. The tournament moves to Engelmann Field for Sunday, when Milwaukee will play Northwestern (10-8-2), another Big 10 team.
"Every year we try to bring in tough competition for the Milwaukee Cup," Moynihan said. "Splitting the hosting duties (with Marquette) allows local youth players to see some of the best competition in the country."
The Panthers stay at home, welcoming Missouri Valley Conference Champions Drake (13-5-3) on Sept. 4 and cross-town rival Marquette (12-8-1) on Sept. 7 before heading to Florida. The Bulldogs missed out on the NCAA Tournament after finishing 7-0 in league play and Marquette will be in its first season as a Big East school. In Florida, UWM starts at Central Florida (17-4-2) on Sept. 9 in Orlando before heading north to Gainesville for a Sept. 11 match up with Florida (16-4-3). UCF defeated the Gators to advance to the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament.
"Good players want to play the best competition," Moynihan said. "We try to provide that every year. It is the goal of this program to elevate itself into the top 20 in the country and we (annually) take on a schedule that allows us to work our way there."
Back in Wisconsin, Milwaukee heads to the Wisconsin Invitational, where it will play Colgate (13-6-2) and the host Badgers (16-6-1), both of which advanced to the NCAA Second Round last season. Staying in the state, UWM opens the Horizon League season at UW-Green Bay Sept. 23. The last time the Panthers played in Green Bay, the Phoenix ended UWM's 22-game league unbeaten streak, 2-1, in overtime.
Illinois State (10-6-4) comes to Milwaukee as UWM's last non-league foe before six-straight league games. Highlighting the league slate is a Oct. 16 showdown with Detroit. The Titans advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season after a 1-0 win over the Panthers in the Horizon League Championship game.
Iowa (3-13-2) from the Big 10 and Colorado College (9-5-2), a Division III school that competes as an Division I Independent in women's soccer, visit Engelmann Field to close out the regular season in late October. The Horizon League Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 3-6 in Green Bay.
Milwaukee finished last season with an 11-8-3 record in the championship game of the Horizon League Tournament. The Panthers had been the first seed after winning their fifth-straight league regular season title. Moynihan returns seniors Janice McGann, who was an all-region honoree last season, and Elizabeth Chudy, who joined McGann on the all-league first team, in addition to six more starters from last season.
