They were crass, they were assholes, and they directed most of their stuff directly at us in 427. Apart from when things started to get way out of hand with the "layup line" and "3-bomb scare," their students left me more proud of our own section.
They were quiet. For the first 10 minutes of the second half, they were downright silent. I actually thought if UWM could bomb a couple threes, their students would be out of it and they'd have a slim chance to climb back into it. No such luck, but oh well.
I didn't find them any good. I wasn't impressed with them, as I have been with the Orange Crush or the Grateful Red or the Cameron Crazies or Wake Forest students, who I've all seen in person. Marquette may think they're Big 6, but those students need to get more involved. And being in the BC doesn't help.
I actually believe that UWM has a better home in the cell. It's smaller, so when it's full, it's louder. The BC is a tomb, an overrated hockey arena.

Agreed Jimmy....the students that decided to file in behind us, were sad excuses of MU Fans...didn't know there own chats..sitting up in 427 Row W..you cant hear much, and so I ask and I get a FBomb. You leave with a nice lead, no class, and no real spirit, and the sad thing is...the team gives you everything...they announce you like your part of the team...thank you from coming. But you dont stay to hear that...I did..I have not left a UWM game until the clock reads 0.00 in the second half.

You were in the 400 sections, the kids up there are the ones who show up only for bigger games and usually show up drunk about 15 minutes before gametime. The better fans are down in the lower bowl or closer to the front of those sections since it's general admission and hence why they don't get as into the game.
Sorry you were treated so poorly, but you were sitting in an opposing teams student section, so what do you expect? The couple times I've gone to the Kohl Hole in my MU gear I've gotten the "Asshole" chant relentlessly and unprovoked for that matter. It's just the risk you assume by going into an opposing teams student section.
I've been to a number of MU-UW games at the Kohl Hole and was less than impressed with the Grateful Red as compared to the MU students at big games. But you probably won't agree for me since your hatred for MU wouldn't let you say one good thing about us.
I don't know if I'd say that they have "no spirit" after all, probably 4200 students (almost 50% of MUs undergrad population) showed up for the game and probably cheered some (I would assume) which is more than you can say for 99.9% of your student body.
What's the phrase...? Those in glass houses...

The kid that thought he was the second coming of Dwyane Wade couldn't even pronounce his own player's names.
Idiot: "Yeah koobleeon!"
Me: "Who?"
Idiot: "David (he pronounced it like the American David) Cublian (L before the I), the guy who is gonna kick your ass!"
Me: "Do you mean David Cubillan? (Dah-veed Coo-bee-yan)"
Idiot: "No, I mean Day-vid Coobleean."
Me: "Who the hell is that?"
Idiot: "The guy who is gonna kick your ass, that's who."
Me: "Yeah, I got that part. Day-vid Cublian doesn't exist. I think you're thinking of David Cubillan."
Idiot: "Whatever man. f*** UWM!"
Me: "Let me know when you have another beer so I can drive you to the emergency room to get your stomach pumped."
*laughter from everyone, MU and UWM fans included.*

So... you characterize your entire opinion of the MU student section based on one incident... smart. There are idiots all over, not just MU or UWM (believe me I've encountered more than my share from both schools).

No, of course not, I just thought that was a funny incident to share.
What I'm saying is the arena really hinders their ability. I like the Cell because we are 5 feet from the court...I wish the cheerleaders weren't there but on the sides for the paying fans, but oh well. I just think it's hard for MU students to get in the game when their section is so detached. When I mean quiet, I don't mean in comparison to our own. I meant in comparison to the other high-majors I've seen. The other high-majors that I've been to get up for even the most pedestrian of teams, but MU fans have lacked. Hopefully you'll have the entire section more engaged in the future, but it hasn't happened yet.
I came away proud of my section because we were closer to a high-major than I thought. Don't get me wrong, I'll take your group over ours any day, but I thought there would be bigger disparity between the two.
Sorry if it sounded as though I had no respect for your student section. The section was good; it was when they got split up individually where I encountered the worst of it.

It's just a thing that we've been doing for a few years now. I think it's one of those "these will get us on Sportscenter" things. I've seen them a number of times on Sportscenter or College Gamenight intros.

The lower bowl is a group of very organized students. The students that I was by, though, were drunken idiots who clearly knew nothing about the team. There were Marquette fans throwing beer at THEIR OWN FANS. F**king idiots.
Every fan base has them.

I dunno. We haven't had any drunk idiot students yet this year.
I kind of wish we did. I didn't like seeing them get more excited over t-shirts than the damn game on Tuesday.

Anytime you combine that many 18-21 years olds with alcohol and an atmosphere that encourages yelling and demonstrative behavior you are bound to encounter a good deal of idiots.
It has nothing to do with MU (or any other campus for that matter). Bottom line is that many members in any large student section are going to be young, drunk, and immature.

agreed, the BC's upper beck sucks for a student section rows are too close together and too steeply pitched. you can't really jump/dance/whatever without the fear of falling. the lower group did look more organized and more into the game. and we all know which school has the better band . too bad we weren't allowed to play at the game, we would've schooled 'em.

Jimmy, please do not characterize anything from our student section from the 400's. I will agree with you they are ignorant kids looking for a party. You know more about our team then they do, thats why they could only get those seats because they didnt care enough to come early. I sat in the 400's one time during my entire time in the students section, and it was the most unenjoyable exprience I had. Its just the way it is, the kids that care the most about team unity and school pride and basketball will not be up there unless there are extenuating circumstances that forced it. Aside from that group our students are as good as it gets, hindered only by their place in the BC. I first wrote about this to our paper in 2002, wishing our students could surround the arena. Alas, I realize forces at play make this impossible, and I understand that the money generated by those tickets is more important. I just wanted to say you are probably right in terms of the fans in the 400's but I felt the need to defend the rest that are top-notch, that cared enough to wait hours and hours in the cold to get their rightful place in 106 every game that I stood shoulder to shoulder with. Finally, the notion that the grateful red is better does not fly with me, and ive been to my share of those games. Those kids come late, are not frenzied, and look as if they wish they were at a football game. In fact, an article in the daily Cardinal just last year noted the MU fans as being superior to the Wisconsin fans. Unfortunatley, I can't find it anymore in the archives so i'm not sure if you'll believe me.

I've got a friend over there, I'll see if I can get a copy of that DC article.
I believe you when you say the lower group is very good. I just didn't get a good view because the BC is a terrible arena for students. You should organize a group to look into building a new, small arena like the Al but larger for men's bball. Obviously it would be 5-10 years away, but your current home in the BC holds MU back in my opinion.
