It will be interesting to see the kind of numbers he puts up this year. He didn't exactly rip it up at EMU.....but then again he was a freshman. I wonder why he left?

Notice the schools mentioned in the hunt for Douglas. UWM isn't handing out scholarships to just anyone.

Good observation, McDade. Glad to have you back. Green Bay's flurry of activity reminds me of something the great John Wooden said, 'Don't mistake activity for achievement.'

I think any guy that starts over half his games and scores 7-8 ppg as a freshman should be considered a pretty good success. How many freshmen do you think put up those numbers? EMU was a .500 team in the MAC last year. I think if the guy progresses with normal growth hes a 12-14 ppg guy. Certainly nothing wrong with that. From all Ive heard Douglas was the No. 1 recruiting target. He was a First-Team All-State guy in Michigan. I think we know that state can produce some players.

I didn't mean for my post to sound overly cynical......just stating that it will be interesting to see how he does this year. There is no doubt that MI has some great bball players and making all-state in hs is an accomplishment. The particular system that a school/program runs is very important in the success (or failure) of a player. For instance, look at Ed. He had modest numbers at NU but has shown he can really play - NU was not the place for him (referring to the system) (similar situation with Joah). I hope this is the case with Douglas. He apparently is more comforatble in an up-tempo system (which UWM definitely has and EMU for the most part does not). It would be great if he could bust out on the scene here like others have. He was being recruited by some other "big name" schools, and it is great that UWM won out.......especially in the early period.
Point of clarification........he scored 5.5 points a game last year (7 point a game in conference games). One can argue that he "found" his game later in the season (conference games), but nonetheless, his overall average is still in the 5 range, not 7 (not a huge deal, just clarifying).
Other interesting stats (keep in mind he is a shooting guard): 5-15 (33.3%) from three point range on the season......is it just me, or does that seem REALLY low (makes and attempts). He was 62-133 (46.6%) in overall field goals and 25-46 (54.3%) from the line.
At first blush, it seems that he is an effective slasher/scorer and not a pure shooter (i.e. three point attempts and free throw percentage).
also 2.3 rebounds per game 2.2 assists per game just under 1 assist per game just over 20 minutes per game played.
Overall, pretty respectable numbers.
Also remember that he was a Soph. at EMU, not a freshman (Prop 48). So, he will have 2 years at UWM.

He was a Prop 48 freshman at EMU and could have gained his eligibility back. Either way, he is just a normal JUCO recruit now. He will have to graduate from Schoolcraft before he comes here. Then he will have two years.
I dont think he is a great long range shooter (ala McCants). He only took 15 three-pointers all year. Now, maybe people call this selective comparison but I always like to look at a guy's league numbers before overall numbers.
Mostly because you are scouted more, game planned more, and it is like competition. Also, its later in the season so you are going to play your best players.
That being said, he had a very good freshman campaign in the MAC.
7.2 points, 2.6 rpb, 2.2 apg. He did shoot 51.0% from the floor which is darn good. Only 5 of 12, 41.7% from three. 67.9% on 28 free throw attempts. Again, any freshman to do that has a future.
I think he is a good, not great player. Certainly not Ed McCants but he will be a good player in the Horizon. Thats all you can really ask for.

Just from looking at Douglas' stats and the type of player we think he is, is there any Panther from the past that you guys think has a similar game? I'm struggling to think of a good comparison.

I don't think UWM has ever had a 6'3" guy who didn't chuck up 3's! Seriously.......I don't. Hardwick would hoist them up at times.....Kenny Parker was about 6'5" and didn't really shoot them, but he was more of a 3/4 as opposed to a 2/3. I am drawing a blank. I mean seriously, he shot 15 the whole season - we have had 6'3" guys (who will go unnamed ) who have shot just about that many in one game.

Hey, guys. We've offered a scholarship to Kyle Duncan, a 6-5 small forward from Ben Davis High in Indianapolis, one of that city's top programs. I couldn't find out much about Kyle because I don't have a subscription to the Indy Star & News. I also hear we're back in the running for Torre Johnson of Milw. Juneau and Garden City C.C.
