BLUE DEVILS HANG AROUND WITH DIVISION I GREEN BAY GREEN BAY (November 3, 2005) - Like a pesky kid brother, UW-Stout, while never leading in the game with NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, hung around until the end of the exhibition contest before falling 69-56.
Several times throughout the evening, the Blue Devils pulled to within a couple of points and had a chanced to take a lead midway throught the first period. Pulling to with 14-13 on a Jake Nonemacher (Jr, Kalispel, Mont) free throw before the Phoenix pulled out to an 11-point, 33-22 halftime lead.
The diminutive Jason Clopton (Jr, Golden Valley, Minn) came off the bench to score eight first half points and finished tied with three other Blue Devils with a team-high 11 points.
The Phoenix kept the Blue Devils at a half arm length in the second half as Stout pulled to within four points five minutes into the second half, 38-34, on a layup by Nate Severson (Jr, Eau Claire). Green Bay finally pulled away for good with about nine minutes left in the game and only twice dipped under a 10 point lead.
Terry Farmer (Sr, Kenosha) and Brian Buck (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) matched Clopton's 11 points.
The Phoenix got a game-high 21 points from Ryan Evanochko and 17 points from Ryan Tillema.
Stout will open the 2005-06 season for real Friday, Nov. 18 when they travel to to the Wooster Tournament where they will open with St. Thomas.
