I know this is a big topic on the UIC board. Personally both Banks and McCants are great players and worthy of the honor. I like what Ed said about the award/scoring title:
"The team is 22-5 and the guy with the scoring title is in fifth or sixth," said McCants, referring to Banks and fifth-seeded UIC. "They will have to come to our place. It all came down to about 10 points and I'll take winning 10 more games to 10 points any day."

here is a season comparison..... things to consider when deciding who will be POY.
Player of the week honors
Cedrick Banks of UIC has been named the Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 13. Banks scored a season-high 24 points, including 21 in the second half, in the Flames' 76-67 come-from-behind victory at UNC Wilmington Dec. 12 in UIC's only action of the week. He was 7-of-14 from the field in the second half and connected on five of his career-tying six three-pointers after halftime when UIC trailed 31-27. Banks, the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year, has now scored 20 or more points in a half 10 times during his career. For the season, he is averaging 14.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

Ed is the best player on the (by far) best team in the conference. If UIC had a better year, I think you can make a better arguement for Banks. As it is, I will be shocked if McCants isn't the runaway POY.

Do you think Joah could "steal" some of Ed's POY votes? I'm sure Lickleiter, from what he's seen of Joah, would vote for JT.

I don't know when the last time a non-senior won the award, I would guess maybe Phillips from Detroit won it as a junior.
AS for POY, I would think Ed has the inside track on the award. It is very hard to give the award to a person who's team finishes .500 in conference play.
As for the stats, the POY should be based off the conference stats. Although Ced is leading the league in scoring at 20.9 ppg, he is also playing 38.12 mpg. Compared to Ed who is avg 18.4 ppg and is not in the top 15 for minutes played (meaning Ed plays less than 31.80 mpg).
As for Coach of the year, I can't see how this award does not go to Garland, 0 conference wins last year to 6 this year.

As for Coach of the year, I can't see how this award does not go to Garland, 0 conference wins last year to 6 this year. But Cleveland State is still in 8th place. Garland won't get it because of that. My guess it goes to Whitsell at Loyola, with Pearl and Kowalczyk with outside chances.

What Kingsbury said. Ed's doing his damage in less than 30 minutes a game for the season. This is a product of the system. Also, as many have said, there's an eight-game difference in the overall records of the two teams. To me, this is an open-and-shut case. Acutally, as McDade said, you could make a better case for Joah as POY. But he's a junior.
