At least three candidates with Wisconsin ties have interviewed for the vacant assistant men’s basketball coaching position on Tod Kowalczyk’s staff at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Former Marquette guard Brian Wardle, UW-Parkside assistant coach Dave Buchanan and AAU coach Ritchie Davis have interviewed.
Kowalczyk is seeking a replacement for Daimon Beathea, who left to become the head coach of the Indianapolis Alley Cats of the American Basketball Association.
Kowalczyk has declined comment on candidates since the position opened last month.
Wardle has been on Marquette’s staff since 2003. He played there from 1997 to 2001. Kowalczyk was an assistant on Marquette’s staff during Wardle’s senior season.
Buchanan has been an assistant at Parkside the last two seasons. Last season, the Rangers, a Division II team, pulled off a stunning upset of UWGB’s Horizon League foe, Illinois-Chicago.
Buchanan was a high school coach for six years before going to Parkside. His 1999 Greenfield team won the Woodland Conference championship for the first time in 31 years, and he was named conference coach of the year in 2002. The Watertown native played at UW-La Crosse from 1991 to 1995.
Davis, a Bloomer native, has been executive director and head coach of the Fox Valley Skillz AAU program since 2000. Among his recent players were Cordero Barkley and Mike Schachtner, who will be freshmen at UWGB this fall, and Wisconsin’s Brian Butch. Davis played at UW-Superior from 1991 to 1995.
It’s unknown whether Kowalczyk intends to interview other candidates or when he will fill the position.
