This is the want ad that UWM placed in the Journal Sentinel in April 2001. I don't know if they were required to do the same this year. Seems as if Pearl fulfilled the requirements pretty well.
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Athletic Department Men’s Basketball Coach
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee invites applicants for the position of Head Coach- Men’s Basketball. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to directing all aspects of a Division I program including recruitment, scheduling, academic success, administrative and budget management, player skill development, staff supervision and community outreach. Starting date is approximately April 16, 2001. Qualifications are a Bachelor’s degree is required and candidates should demonstrate a record of accomplishment in coaching, academic success and rules compliance. Strong communication skills with faculty, students, alumni and general public are highly preferred.

It is an interesting question, though, whether there was an ad this time. Opening/advertising all jobs at a university that takes federal funds, as UW does (in grants, in student aid, etc.) is required for all jobs, supposedly. But there may be some shortcut like putting an ad online fast for a coaches list that counts. Or -- maybe waiting for the ad to run or waiting to take applications or something is slowing this down somewhat. The UW is supposed to be pretty careful on this because of some past problems.
