I would like to draw on the vast knowlege of the Krazies (we really need a new name for you guys).
Is it possible to structure Doherty's contract so that the buyout is $1 to $2 million for 3 to 4 years, and then reducing to a more reasonable number thereafter.
This would help a great deal and keep him here long enough to continue to build real momentum.
I cant imagine that a major school would consider a buy out of that much.

It's completely possible.
But why do you think he would agree to those terms? It's not like UWM could sneak them into the contract.

It would be a bluff call to require the language. If Bud is looking for him to make a comitment and he says he's willing, he will have to sign the contract to demostrate his sincerrity.
It cuts both ways. It prettty much would mean he couldn't be fired no matter how much he screwed up, either.
I guess I'm banking on his wanting to rehabilitate his career, so he'll behave, and he really needs UWM right now. Not many other attractive alternatives out there for him.
UWM has the upper hand right now, where Doherty is concerned.

yeah it a lot easier to recruit kids when the name on the jersey says "North Carolina Tar Heels"
from what i hear Dorthety is going to get the nod as coach most likely and i got to say i really am not too sure just how well this thing is gonna work.
yes he is a big name, but i would have to say if he is such a good coach why is it that this is the first tiem that he has been seriously considered for a head coacching spot in the NCAA.
just cuz he is a big name does not eman by any means that he will be able to be successful or that he will be able to bring in kids to play, and yeah something tells me that if does dail up MR. Greatest of all Time and says "hey help me talk this kid into coming to Milwaukee" i got a feeling that MJ might have to actually do double take. Not to take anything away from our program but just conventional wisdom says that Dorthety calling MJ to bring a kid here is going to be a bit far fetched.
but we will see i suppose...................

Ok honestly, when Matt Doherty was hired he was the second option in Chapel Hill. They wanted Roy Williams at that time but he knew he had some good teams at Kansas coming up. Also, Bill Gutheridge knew what he was doing. He gave a cupboard full of Jr's and Sr's to Doherty who had a great first year in Chapel Hill, an alright second and a dismal third. It's no coinsidence that even Roy Williams had a hell of a time getting the kids to respond last year. He said it in his Sunday Conversation on Sportscenter. So truth be told Doherty was in one hell of a situation down there in NC, a no win situation. For him to keep his job he needed to win 25 games a year. Plus it didn't help that Dean Smith gave his endorsement to Roy for the coaching job the first time publicly and not Matt. NC worships Dean and what he says it what they believe. So Doherty was seen as a second tier coach and as soon as Doherty had a group full of young players and posted a 19-16 record in 2002-2003 he was gone. I mean the guy can coach he proved that in his first year at NC and he proved he can recruit because he brought in Felton, May, and McCants. Also dont forget about what a hell of a job he did at Notre Dame. That program hadn't seen success since Digger was the coach. So in my eyes I just think that Matt got a pretty raw deal down in Chapel Hill and he deserves UWM and UWM deserves him. Honestly I just feel as though he is our man, hes the man we need. Plus the whole idea of a nationally recognizable face at our program is intriguing to me.

IMO, if we do get Doherty, its going to be for 2 years maximum. I'm not so sure that's a bad thing, however.
Thoughts?

I agree Lou. Maybe 3 years, but that's the absolute max. After what went on at UNC between him and the players, how our guys respond to him would be just as important as his success, at least for Doherty's future. It may take 2-4 years for Doherty to convince a "bigger" school that he's learned his lesson. I'll take that 2-4 years of success any day. Especially if he's able to bring in seven legit ballers after next season. On a side note, I REALLY hope they're not serious about this D-2 guy. Nothing against him, but I don't think that's the direction we should be going in. Four years ago, no one really knew who Bruce was, or really UWM for that matter. Four years, one NIT, two NCAAs, one Sweet 16 and three straight 20-win seasons, everyone knows who we are. We shouldn't be going after another "diamond in a rough". It's a high quality job and we need someone who will grab national attention immediately. Doherty would do that. Being a UNC fan and all, I guess I might be a little biased though.

I fully agree with Panther 97. Peter Brown has this one completely right (1250 AM, weekdays, 2-6 p.m.) This program has outgrown Division 2 head coaches and Division 1 assistants. Give us Gillen, Doherty or Jarvis.

Give us Gillen, Doherty or Jarvis. You're on crack if you want Jarvis.

You know Hack, crack really gets a bad name. You shouldn't knock it until you've tried it!
Say what you want about Jarvis, but he is without a doubt the funniest looking prospect out there. He reminds me of Grimus, from McDonalds.
