If anybody listened to WISN tonight, they were talking UWM basketball during the first half of the show, and had an interview with the President of ChampSearch, the firm that has been hired by UWM to help in the search for a new coach. Now as luck would have it, I actually missed the interview itself and most of the show that dealt with UWM. So, if anyone made have heard the show, please feel free to add your imput. I just had a sort of quick review that was done by the host. The key aspects I picked up was that at the moment, ChampSearch has 10-12 coaching applicants for the UWM job. I'm sure they will probably get more, but like I said I didn't hear the interview so that was just the impression I got from the quick overview that was given by the host. I believe the host mentioned that ChampSearch will eventually limit the number of applicants to 6 or 7 and will only include a list of coaches who are actually interested in the job and not just trying to use UWM to get an increase in pay at the school they are coaching at now. There is no preference being given to coaches who may have local ties. A couple other things were mentioned, but they didn't really stick out in my mind, other than the President of ChampSearch did not want to mention names and wanted to remain vague about any possible candidates.

quick question...
Do you think that ChampSearch gets paid on both ends...similar to other "head hunter" operations. It's been documented that UWM has hired them to help with the screening process. Are the coaches that end up at the front of the line, coaches that agree to kick back to ChampSearch a percentage of their contract?

Not sure if it's on both ends, but wouldn't be surprised -- and no matter how it's done, it probably costs a lot. A search for a Chancellor, according to a source to the JS last year, can cost something like $100,000. If the search was based on the time spent on it, coaches would come cheap, as this is happening in just a couple of weeks, while the search for a Chancellor takes a year or sometimes two. But the cost of a search is based a lot on a percentage of the pay for a position, according to the paper -- and sometimes the total compensation, which as we've seen can be a lot more for a coach. But the JS this week also had something about UT's package including a buyout for Pearl's contract, something like $194,000. So that money can be spent by UWM on the search, I bet, or on the next coach's compensation. But it's not enough for a personal jet.
