This Matt Doherty thing is really intriguing the more I read articles on him.
He has pulled his name from the Tulsa job.
Either way, this is like "hooking-up" for the first time after that big break up. Even if this isn't meant to be, at least I'm back out there and feeling good again.
(yes, the dating references are endless with this coaching thing and the last 48 hours)

This is what I like to hear. From the Tulsa link:
"Matt adapts to his personnel, but he loves fast-break basketball, and he loves pressure defense."
-Davidson head coach Bob McKillop, a close friend and mentor of Doherty

That last article on czabe.com was interesting. It may be true or partially true. But not listing a name or source other than "From a very good contact" doesn't give it any credibility. We all know how "insane" NC Basketball fans are. That could have came from anyone with a chip on their shoulder.
What coach doesn't yell at their players? Especially the players that have been told their whole lives how great they are. An ACC scholarship basketball player that needs a kick in the pants? Naww never.
I take more stock in quotes like this:
This is a quote from Roy Williams on March 6th: "I hate what happened to Matt. I had moments there that I thought I would not even talk to North Carolina because I didn't like what had happened. But at the same time, I felt I had to make a decision that was best for my own life. In the end, leaving Kansas was very emotional."

Now this I love... NORTH CAROLINA DOHERTY, MATT 2/01 North Carolina head coach Matt Doherty has written a letter of apology to the Duke cheerleaders after calling them "the ugliest cheerleaders in the ACC." Doherty made the statement during a team huddle in the Tar Heels' 85-83 victory over Duke on Feb. 1. The remark appeared in The Pulse, ESPN The Magazine's Web page on ESPN.com. Doherty, who also called the cheerleaders' coach to apologize, says he will be more careful what he tells his players in a timeout huddle. Doherty said the comment was meant to be a joke to break the tension, but some Duke students say Doherty went too far and have complained about the comment. espn.go.com/ncb/news/2001/0215/1085834.html

sounds like an awesome coach/recruiter but i have to admit that czabe article scares me a little. everyone gets yelled at but coaches sometimes do take it too far which is what sounds like happened and that puts the athletes in a tough spot. i dont know how i would feel about him being named our new head coach

Without any credibile sources or references, it lacks exactly that, credibility.

what he did for college.. Doherty had started for three-plus seasons at UNC under legendary coach Dean Smith, winning an NCAA championship in 1982 while playing alongside James Worthy and Michael Jordan. Heres a quotes from some of those great moments. DP: Speaking of freshmen, when Jordan hit that jumper to win the national championship, where were you? MD: I was at the foul line, wide open, and I'm still mad he didn't pass me the ball.
Early Coaching Years Doherty worked on Wall Street, was an assistant to Roy Williams at Kansas for seven successful seasons, recruiting some of the finest players in Jayhawk history, and was head coach at the University of Notre Dame. His Fighting Irish team won 22 games and reached the finals of the NIT.
About Roy Williams Total Coaching Resume Up to Carolina Some of his accomplishments are:
First season as head coach at UNC he coached the Tar Heels to 26 wins and a number 1 national ranking
UNC had a 13-3 ACC league record and shared the regular season championship
Tar Heels went to the ACC Tournament final game
UNC earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament
Only coach to win the regular season title in their first year in the ACC
Only person ever to coach and play for a number 1 ranked team at the same school
His first Tar Heels team won the first 18 games they played including 11 straight conference games
Longest win streak UNC had enjoyed since the 1985-86' season
Associated Press named Doherty the National Coach of the Year following the 2000-01' season
United States Basketball Writers Association named him District Coach of the Year following the 2000-01' season
Coached Notre Dame to 22 wins in his only season there - 1999-2000
Notre Dame defeated five nationally ranked teams 22 win season most ever in Notre Dame's history by a first year coach
A Failing Carolina Season Matt picks up Peices Three transferred -- Adam Boone, Brian Morrison and Neil Fingleton -- and some among Doherty's initial recruiting class also contemplated leaving.
Doherty was able to smooth things over, and this season he brought in a top recruiting class that included Raymond Felton, Sean May and Rashad McCants. The team started 5-0 and was ranked in the top 25.
Trouble in Carolina Doherty resigned after a bumpy run marked by feuds with players and his failure to lead North Carolina back to national prominence.
SI's Spin The team's failure to make the NCAA tournament in two of his three seasons was secondary to Doherty's leadership deficiencies, and his inability to get along with players and UNC athletic department staff.
Not the Carolina way Players went public with their dissension. Chancellor James Moeser and athletics director Dick Baddour criticized Doherty's personality and his relationship with his players at a news conference. It looked like a players mutiny countenanced by administrators. None of it seemed like the Carolina way.Last Leg as a Tar Heel May broke his foot in late December, and the Tar Heels began to struggle. But they managed to get it together late in the year, beating Duke in the regular-season finale and Maryland in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament before going three rounds into the NIT.
After the team's final game last Wednesday night, a 79-74 loss to Georgetown in the NIT quarterfinals, most of the Tar Heels said they would return, and they supported their coach. The next day, Baddour met with them as a group and then individually.
This link clearifyes who said what. Not sure if its credible. www.czabe.com/backup/doherty.htmHis Carolina Contract Doherty leaves with three years left on a six-year contract that paid him $855,000 a season. He will receive $337,500 from the school, which will include $150,000 from the upcoming basketball camp, Baddour said.
This article explains how Matt went from dunce to a genuis good read. slate.msn.com/?id=2074809In defense of Matt in the Carolina Story Should Doherty have been fired? Not by any reason set forth by Baddour on Tuesday. And not by any story that has come out about the way he treated his players.
the University of No Courage, the University of No Class, where factions of alums, thin-skinned players and overprotective parents are calling the shots for spineless administrators
on Boudour He never played. He never coached. He has a habit of letting players talk him into things (like the hiring of football coach Carl Torbush, who he had to fire after three seasons). Just three years ago he chose Doherty; now that has blown up in his face.

Personal Life DP: When was the last time you went to a concert? MD: I went to see Bruce Springsteen a little over a year ago in the United Center. And growing up I was a Springsteen fan. I saw Springsteen in the Meadowlands in, like, '86, a couple years out of college. And "Born to Run" was one of my favorites songs when I was in high school.
Known as an intense guy on the basketball court with much energy. Not afraid to speak his mind.

From the MSN article...
"Doherty is not one of them. He seems capable of coaching only one system, which favors a relentless man-to-man defense and a fast-paced offense."
What team does that sound like?
