I just remember Doherty having a bunch of pissed off players in May, McCants and Felton and they had a player uprising because of what a jerk coach Doherty was to them...don't want that here. Yes a disciplinarian, not to a dictatorship.

True, but I'm guessing there was more to that situation ... especially when Roy Williams feels bad for what happened to Matt.
Appears the inmates were trying to run the asylum.

I disagree...so all of the sudden Roy comes to town and they play like a team and kick ass all the the way to the Final Four, while Doherty couldn't even 20 games two years in a row.

Hiring Doherty would bring instant (and continued) credibility to the program. Yes, there would be risks in the hire, given what happened at UNC. But, from what I've read, there's pretty much equal blame to share in that situation. Yes, Doherty was more aggressive with the players than he should've. And yes, the players tried to revolt.
If UWM hires Doherty, my hope is that he's learned his lesson. For his sake, I hope he has because if he screws up here, his coaching career is over. If he's the man, let's just hope he realizes that.

Why do we have to continue calling ourselves a "mid-major"?? Is it because of the hypen in the name? I for one no longer consider Gonzaga a mid-major, they're right up there with the big boys and we can be too, once you get your name out there (and we've gotten a lot of publicity in the last 2 weeks) kids start wanting to come here to play ball and you can get the high level talent instead of losing them to a bench spot on an ACC team.

It would be fun to have Majerus here. He'd win and he'd say stupid stuff... During the last minute of a 20-point blowout of TENNESSEE by Kentucky... "Well, there's not much to look forward to from here on out, so I'm trying to find Ashley Judd in the crowd. It beats the adult videos at the hotel." [Heard on ESPN, 1/25/2005] After Kentucky defeated Utah for the national title in 1998, Ashley Judd gave Utes coach Rick Majerus a hug, something he will never forget... "She hugged me as a consolation because we lost," he said the other day. "I went to bed for two years with that as my sex life." [St. Paul Pioneer Press, 03/24/2003] To Jay Bilas, wearing a polo shirt rather than the traditional Hawaiian shirt while covering a tournament in Hawaii... "Jay, only a guy who gets out of the shower to take a piss would wear a shirt like that." [ESPN, 01/04/2005, Quoted on DukeBasketballReport.com] www.activejoints.com/majerus/majquotes.html

My concern, if we continue to try to go to the "next level", where the hell do we get the money to pay? I could see Doherty being here 2-3 years, going to the NCAA each year, leaving, and there being a tremendous drop off at that point in the quality of the program. It's hard to balance wanting to keep the success going and create some longevity with coaches. Such is the plight of the mid-major. The money comes from two sources: 1. Ticket sales. We have a big enough arena to generate significant revenue IF we can ever get our average attendence near 10,000. A big if, but not impossible for the future. 2. Alumni Money. This is the biggie. We have something like 100,000 UWM alums out there. There's a lot of money available, but only with continued success will we be able to tap into it. The ability to move from the "mid-major" category to a "major" is there. But it's going to take a while, and probably a few more rounds of coaches leaving after 3-4 years.

If Doherty bolts in 2 or three years, it will be back to the ACC or something better than UT is today. It most certainly will not be to Marquette because if the next coach is successful, the program will be at the next level. We will not be in the Horizon League (although we may be in a league with some of its current teams); we will not be drawing 5000/game and although the next coach will not be a nomad (just like the rest of them) there will finally be few better places to go.
By saying that he's not a good choice because he'd bolt is to say that he has a chance to be a great coach. This idea that you can hire some local guy who won't ever want to leave is a fantasy. The only way to keep a coach is to settle for mediocrity or move on to greatness. I would opt for the latter.
"If you will it, it is no dream."

Let's see, we're a mid-major because we play in a non-major conference. I think that's the biggest reason we're still calling ourselves a mid-major. Southern Illinois doesn't have a hyphen, they're a mid-major. Nevada and Pacific too.
If you don't play in the Big East, ACC, SEC, Big Twelve, Big Ten, PAC Ten, or what used to be Conference USA, and your name is not Gonzaga, you're a mid-major.
Fact of life and fact of college basketball.
And please, everyone, stop the Majerus talk. He's a french fry away from having the assistant coach be the head coach. I'll take Doherty in a heartbeat over Majerus, even if he were to jump ship in a few years.
Southern Illinois lost coaches and are still successful, Gonzaga lost coaches and they're still successful. As a mid-major, you lose your coaches but if you put a winning program together you CAN remain successful.
