Wow. Surprised about the Majerus, considering what we've heard through the grapevine.

I had heard that Majerus was in fact very interested in a final go-round. This confidence came from Sheboygan. Pete Gillen, I believe, would be a sound hire considering his age and his track record of mid-major success.

It was just on the 5:00 News, can't say I'm surprised about Rick Majerus, I really think he would like to get in better shape before coming back.

Doherty is intriguing. Great success at ND. He was National Coach of the Year at UNC then seemed to get into a feud with his players. He recruited some of the guys that are in the Final 4. Depending on what happened and what he learned from it, he might be the guy who takes us up a rung.
On the other hand, he would almost certainly be a nomad. But he might accomplish a lot before he goes. Maybe this coach thing has to go in stages.
Gillen would also be intriguing. Hiring either of those guys sends a message. But getting the right guy is more important than the right message.

2 things:
1) Not like you guys really care what a Marquette guy thinks but I think Matt Doherty would be a great hire. The 1 year he spent at ND was good enough to attract a coach like Mike Brey. ND has been pretty good since then. He also did well at Carolina. The inmates run the asylum at Chapel Hill and those kids ran him out of town. He is a solid coach and, having met him numerous times, he is a pretty nice dude. Bring a guy like Doherty in, let him coach for 3-6 seasons, continue the uptick in the program and it gives a legitimacy to Wisconsin-Milwaukee that it's never had. FWIW, I want Doherty to get a job now so that he can take over for Crean in 6 years.
2) The poster who started this thread has one of the funnier screen handles that I've seen. Don't worry Panther fans, you'll get your shot at Marquette sooner than you think.
Good luck with the coaching search.

My thoughts exactly about Doherty. The more I look at it, the more I like the prospects of Doherty or Pete Gillen. Stop on by whenever you want NOLA ... just leave Uncle Chicos over there.

I have been trying to remember some of the things that happened with Matt Doherty over at NC. In reading some past articles, it seems the over expectations were forcing him out before he started.
Those are his recruits and his team in the Final Four right now. Recently, he was considered for the UMass job and also interviewed and withdrew his name from the Tulsa job.
This is a quote from Roy Williams on March 6th: "I hate what happened to Matt. I had moments there that I thought I would not even talk to North Carolina because I didn't like what had happened. But at the same time, I felt I had to make a decision that was best for my own life. In the end, leaving Kansas was very emotional."
I hope they consider Matt. This is a big move for us. Getting a "local guy" (Bennett, Jeter, Majerus) is not that important any more.

Majerus isn't interested.
It's going to be Doherty, and I'm liking that more and more.

Doherty would be a bad choice, he would be lucky to last 2-3 years. If he had any success, you would see him bolt as fast as he could.

I agree with Kaygee that Doherty would be here for 2-3 year, 4 years max, but I don't think it would be a bad decision. No doubt he would bring the program to the "next level", as Bud's been saying he wants.
My concern, if we continue to try to go to the "next level", where the hell do we get the money to pay? I could see Doherty being here 2-3 years, going to the NCAA each year, leaving, and there being a tremendous drop off at that point in the quality of the program.
It's hard to balance wanting to keep the success going and create some longevity with coaches. Such is the plight of the mid-major.

Either way, if you're successful no one is going to stay more than four years ... we are what we are I guess.
