Generally, the Panthers are thought of more highly on a national basis than locally. Locally, the average sports Joe in southeast Wisconsin considers UWM basketball as being in a lower tier, behind the Packers, Brewers, Bucks, Badgers and Marquette. This is a perception that is gradually impoving, but will take at least one generation (i.e. 20 years) to evolve. On the national level, UWM basketball gets the benefit of a fresh start, without the bias that is based on past history. A very insightful 1st post, JKO, very well put. It takes time for perception to catch up to reality. Especially when the major media locally (i.e Urinal Slantinel) isn't giving you the big (front page) exposore on a regular basis. The part of your post I disagree with is the length of time that it would take for our perception locally to change - provided we keep winning. I can't see it taking more than 10 years. We may not be in the same situation here as a Gonzaga or even a Creighton (not having any competition and being in smaller cities) but provided we keep Pearl or get another successful coach and keep keep moving in the direction we've been headed for over 3 years now, I think we'll have the Cell filled and the front page headlines for January League games THIS decade. The future is bright. -Jason

I thought we played a great game, even as we were down by a couple in the first few minutes I wasn't worried because I saw how we could run over them. Hawaii came out and played a great game but our team was just a bit too athletic for them to handle. Ed's dunk was great, Boo's dunk was top ten and J.Wright, wow! great to see him get up like that again! Can't wait for the horizon tourny, hope to see everyone down there getting loud. Let's go out and get what we left behind last year!

Notable on a number of different levels, in that guard Matt Gibson -- who played out of his mind on Saturday --isn't listed among the scoring leaders and Hawaii turned the ball over only four times against the second-place team from the WAC.
UTEP 71, Hawaii 67
HONOLULU (AP) -- Omar Thomas scored 27 points to lead Texas-El Paso to a 71-67 victory over Hawaii on Monday night.
With the score tied at 62-all with just under four minutes to go in the game, UTEP (21-7, 11-4 Western Athletic Conference) went on a 7-2 run, including four points from Thomas, to give the Miners some space.
After Hawaii's Jake Sottos completed a 3-point play to bring the Rainbow Warriors to within two points, 69-67, Miner Giovanni St. Amant made two free throws with 12.6 seconds remaining to seal the four-point victory for UTEP.
Sottos led Hawaii (14-9, 6-8) with 15 points. Jeff Blackett added 12 points and Julian Sensley had 11 for the Rainbow Warriors.
Hawaii turned the ball over a season-low four times, but committed a critical turnover with 30 seconds remaining when Deonte Tatum missed teammate Sensley and threw the ball into the Hawaii bench.
Filiberto Rivera added 15 points for UTEP and St. Amant had 11.
The Miners made 11 of their first 15 shots of the game to lead by as many as 11 points in the first half.
