So ive checked over the box scores of UWGB and i defined Butler, HartFord, Cleav St, and Wright St as wins against good teams. As well as looked at the box score for their losses against Wi and Northern Iowa.
GB on Paper becomes a very scary team to play considering the fallowing.
In all of their wins: the opposing teams took more shots in the FG area. In 3 games ( Wright, Cleav St, Butler) GB still had a better shooting percentage and scored more points from the FG while attempting less shots. Their opponents averaged 6 more shots than GB with a high of 16 more FG attempted. I havnt seen much of GB play but i would guess it involves alot of screens an assisting. This will take alot of defensive energy and use of our struggling depth.
An exception to this would be that GB attempted a large number of three pointers or free throws. This is only true for the Hartford game were GB took 41 Free throw shots, making 31.
Which means they are playing much like air force with the exception that GB does will not take as many offensive rebounds. ( get to that later). While the other team shoots themselves in the foot. Something UWM is very capable seeing how boo daivs likes to run down the court and shoot with only taking 6 seconds off the game clock only to miss. This could be dangerous for UWM bc while we are running and gunning UWGB could be taking their time, and making more points with less shot oppertunities. Something that could completly frustrate the guys.
3 pointers - the same can almost be said as mentioned above. Except this time it is 50-50. In the butler and hartford game GB only took 21 shots at the arch Butler was able to hold Gb to 3-17 from the arch, However, Hartford allowed 7-21. Again these two teams took more shots than GB from the arch and missed more. Butler 4-25 and Hartford 4-22. IWhich goes to show that GB does not need to rely on the perimeter game or the paint game to win. They take either or.
I can only speculate but most of these missed shots result in rebounds by GB at which point they take the ball down court and take the smart shot.
The other aspect of the GB offense is that they usually have 3 players in double digits, ranging from 11-15 points per game and 3 more players ranging from 6-9 points per game. This team play has proven well against Butler, Hartford, Wright, Cleav.
Not to be a downer but GB has consistent scoring from everyone which allows their starting 5 to not play their hearts out for 35 min. Which leaves them refreshed.
Two things can be related to UWM about this; 1. UWGB ends up playing their starting 5 and their 6th man about 4 min less than these four oppenents. Which means they are not exhausted and ready to hustle. 2. Even when teams has a player who has a break out game for points it ususally ends up costing them. For instance - Butler's Forward scored 17, Hartford's G scored 19 with their PT G scoring 13, Cleav St's Forward scored 38 points with the rest of the team not so consistent and they all lost. Reminds me of the detroit game with McCants scoring 38. Which had other factors to why we lost but the fact remains GB can win against a lights out shooter. UWM has prove then can lose too with McCants shooting the lights out. THe point is that we need McCants, Tiger, Tucker, with double digits.
The panthers will definetly need Tigert, McCants, Tucker, in the double digits while Boo and Hill score 6-9 points. Something weve been hoping for all year, for all our good players firing on all cylanders so to say. But be weary of a break out game. GB has seen it before and GB pulled out a win with opposing players shooting 38 points.
In fact Wright St, the team in the HL who almost beat GB had a team play that was very spread out.

Additioanlly in the games UWGM lost the team scoring for WI had 3 players with high double digits and two players who had 7-9 points. Some good news, when northern Iowa beat GB they had a break out shooter with 25 points, and then one more player with double digits and two players with 9 points and the 6th man with 8. That looks alot like McCants playing with UWM. So maybe our type of Ed shoots the lights out wont hurt u s in the end.
A good testiment to UWGB scoring abilities and style is their high number of assists each game. In fact in all their quality wins they had more assists than their opposing teams. Which does not mean much for the match ups. But in the two games they lost to Northern Iowa and WI, GB had less assists than WI and GB. So that could possibley mean if you control their ability to pass and screen an out play the passing game you have a better shot at beating UWGB.
Now to address the losses by UWGB. They lost to WI (a great team) and Northern Iowa (dont know much about them) When you take a closer look at those games, its hard to understand why GB lost. In the WI game, GB shot 45% from the feild and 46% from the arch. Againts Northern Iowa Gb shot 46% from the field and 30% from the arch. At first glance these numbers look great, hell we would prolly take them. WI and N Iowa also had a great shooting game.
Wi shot 45% FG
N Iowa 52% FG
Dont worry about making all our threes: WI was held to just 21% of their point shots in their win against GB.
N Iowa however was able to grab 6 three pointers out of 13 with GB hitting 3-10. So UWM a major 3 point shooting team will need to hit about 40% at least.
A good side note about the WI game. WI was able to out score GB by hitting 15 free throws to GB's 7 free throws. WI who only made two more FG's than GB was also down 2 three pointers. So fouls will make a differnce in this game. Lets be clean, and get those zebras to hate GB. Oh and lets make those Free throws!
Defensive Wins: This is were the news looks a little brighter. In GB's four quality wins they did not stomp the opposing team with defence. In most cases the D was rather equal. HOwever, this does not say much, because if GB isnt winning with out a power D UWM's good defence might not matter. But lets look closer.
In the games they won they were out rebounded by their opponents 125-135. Averaging 2.5 less rebounds per game when they won. Even though the opposing teams had a slight edge on the boards it did not seem to change the outcome of the game. In the games that GB has lost (WI, Northern Iowa) UWGb was out rebounded 54-63.
The good news in all that is that GB never grabs more offensive rebounds than their opponents. They have either tied or had less. With UWM averaging 44.6 (best in the HL to GB's 35.9 rpg) rebounds per game it can be a factor if Tigert, Ford, Wright, Tucker, and whover, bring their A game in the paint.
Just a disclaimer, winning the boards does translate into winning the game seeing how GB has not out rebounded these 6 opponents. Yet still won 4-6 of these what i call "quality" games.
THINGS TO HELP UWM WIN
1. Take smart shots, no run and gun
2. Rebounds Rebounds Rebounds
3 Beak down their ability to pass and assist
4. Everyone Score!!!! Not just Ed or Joah
Thats all i have for now. If you want to check my stats i got everything off of UWGB web site. other wise if you ask me i can send you my spread sheet info.
