Well what do you guys think? What's happened to the Panthers over the past 5 games?
UIC is a pretty decent team, but to lose to YSU and a very depleted Butler back to back? I guess those are the hazards of conference play.
Here's the skinny on the Jaspers...We have one bad loss - to Iona - another stomping at the hands of a decent Wichita State team, a win over Richmond, and little else to write home about. Had an 8 point halftime lead at Syracuse but couldn't close them out. Despite their record they have only played well in a handful of games until very recently.
The star is 6'2" guard and Wooden Award candidate Luis Flores. He has great range and a devastating first step to the hole. Gets to the free throw line a lot but is having a sub-par year shooting 86% from the line. Complementing Flores in the backcourt are two basically interchangeable point guards, Jason Wingate and Kenny Minor...Wingate very smooth and clutch...Minor 5'8" and lightning quick.
The top 4 in the frontcourt include 6'7" Dave Holmes, who is a double-double threat every game...Peter Mulligan is a NY kid who just transferred back from UMBC and is finally finding his spot on this team...Jason Benton is a 6'6" banger with great hops...Mike Konovelchik is a DEEP 3 point threat and a great defender. Whisper thin 6'8" Guy Ngarndi will see limited action, but he is an incredibly athletic frosh who can block shots, and is wildly effective as the point defender at the top of Manhattan's seldom-used 1-3-1 zone D.
They'll play man-to-man for the most part, but have no problem dropping into a series of zones. They will press full-court from tip off to the final buzzer.
Coach Bobby Gonzalez is usually hated by most opponents - he is extremely intense and just can't stay in the box to save his life. Obviously we love the guy...but are resigned to the fact that this is probably his last year at Manhattan.
We know you guys have a great player in Page, a very good inside-outside game, and you shoot well from the line. The Panthers score a lot of points - Manhattan has no problem with that kind of game. I expect this to be very close and a very entertaining game. Maybe it gets us both an appearance on ESPN again next year...Drop by our board if you have the inclination...Hopefully your fans show up...I'm looking forward to hearing the chant "What the hell's a JASPER?" on national TV!
GO JASPERS!
