My concern in this situation is that Jones will probably be the next Panther head coach. I'm just guessing here, but he did turn down an assistant's job at Ohio State to stay at UWM. I think it's a good guess that, when Pearl moves up the ladder, Jones will be given every consideration for the job.
That being the case, what does that kind of reaction say about Jones temperment for the head job?

I agree with your concern, but sometimes we all can get caught up in the "heat of the moment". Although this does not excuse bad judgement, it does at times explain why it happens. Since we do not know if this is true or not, or the circumstances surrounding this incident, I think we should all be slow to pass judgement - after all, this was cited in a GB paper. Although it is arguable that Jones would be the frontrunner for the head position if BP were to leave, I am sure that there are others that would be shortlisted for this position, and it is by no means one that Jones is guaranteed. IMO.

I was within 5 feet when he said bite me. He actually repeated it a number of times. As a huge GB fan we have always loved Bruce Pearl. He has a huge enery and always has fun with us. He usually has a smile for us. It is hard to really give him a hard time because he is such a great coach. As for the assistant, he has a long way to go. I am sure that if Bruce Pearl hired him and has confidence in him he is worthy, but if I am a booster or a fan I would be very concerned about someone who acted like such a punk during a heated moment. I know that is a little harsh but it is the truth.

So, you're concerned about UWM's associate head coach being a "punk"? What does that make UWGB's Head Coach? He's the one that started the exchange and continued to escalate the situation. Last season at the Klotche Center, he stared down Justin Lettenburger for ten minutes rather than coach his team. Common denominator in the two games:Green Bay was getting beaten badly. Tod Kowalczyk is a sore loser and a baby. He carried Tom Crean's clipboard for two years and now he thinks he's John Wooden. I hope you enjoyed the easy schedule in the first half of the season. Look forward to more lopsided losses and more tantrums for Toddles. On a positive note, you have a beautiful facility. I'm very disappointed that some of you in black and gold have jumped ship on Coach Jones so quickly. Any of you that have met Tony know that he's a great guy. With regard to his ability to coach, I hardly think that one heated discussion with an opposing coach makes him unfit to lead. He's a good recruiter and the players respond to him.

I agree with acoffey (welcome to the board acoffey!), it's unfair to believe that this whole affair was started by Jones. The Green Bay press has really been trying to stir the pot on this issue, so I would take what you read there with a grain of salt.
I was also extremely upset with the fact that Fox Sports had a mic on Pearl the whole game and not Coach K. It really gave Coach P an extremely unfair angle to the viewers. Meanwhile Coach K was talking to the refs and yelling just as much.
As for Coach Jones being our head coach...I would fully support that, I respect him both on and off the court...really great guy. However I still give Coach Pearl 2-3 years at Milwaukee (keep an eye on Iowa's record, I have a hunch they will be hunting Pearl down). Maybe Pearl will stay even longer since he is still pretty young compared to some top program's coaches and he has some big time recruits heading to UWM. I do too however think that Jones may just follow Coach Pearl to the next level.

Well first of all, if Jones said "bite me", he is responding to something Coach K or a GB member said. People usually don't walk up to people and say it. As for mlphnx1, you should look at your own coach for not setting a good example. He would only shake about 10 players hands on the team, granted we have a ton of players and coaches but show the players some respect and shake everybody's hand. Personally, I don't know what it is about Kowalczyk, but I hate him more than Collins.
As for Pearl, I think he will be here next year unless a university is willing to spend some money to buy out his new contract he signed in the off-season. I think Jones will be the next coach of UWM when Pearl leaves. UWM plays a style of basketball that would be best kept intact by a coach that has knowledge of the system. Plus, it is working out pretty good for Pitt right now with Jamie Dixon taking over for Ben Howland when he left for UCLA.

Bad blood reaches boiling pointCoaches' dispute gets out of hand[/color] By DAN MANOYAN dmanoyan@journalsentinel.com Posted: Jan. 21, 2004 For those sitting courtside at the UW-Milwaukee-UW-Green Bay basketball showdown Saturday, it was an ugly scene. For those who happened to be milling around in the Resch Center lobby after the game, it was an even uglier scene. UWM assistant coach Tony Jones and UW-Green Bay head coach Tod Kowalczyk exchanged harsh words in the heat of the game, then traded even more heated words in a chance meeting in the lobby afterward. According to an witness to Round II, a Brown County Sheriff's Deputy had to step in between the two men to keep the situation from escalating. DAN MANOYAN's account of the incident continues at: www.jsonline.com/sports/coll/jan04/201678.aspAlso in the same article -- UWM rises in SagarinUWM's victory over Green Bay, its fifth straight, is getting the team noticed. In the most recent Sagarin ratings, the Panthers climbed to 66th. In the same ratings, Wisconsin was ranked 16th, Marquette 87th and Green Bay 123rd. Pearl said he hasn't seen the ratings but isn't particularly surprised. "I think it's a function of our schedule," Pearl said. "We've played some pretty good teams and the fact we have 11 wins is another factor." Quite frankly I can't and wouldn't argue with what anyone has said in reference to my remarks. I agree that our head coach acted like a punk as well and maybe he even started it. I can't speak to that because I only know what Jones said. I wouldn't have even minded if he would have gotten excited in the heat of the moment and said it once. He did it repeatedly and that isn't what we are used to seeing from UWM. Those of us who are lucky enough to sit in the seats we have love it when UWM and Coach Pearl come in. The program is extremely athletic and well coached. It's fun for us to see. We haven't really ever had the type of athlete the UWM has. Even when we had NCAA tournament teams with players like Tony Bennett or Jeff Nordgaard it was a different brand of basketball.
UWM is by far the better team and I believe the best team in the conference. As to the comment about enjoying the easy first half of the season - this is true but we have to start somewhere and winning the games we haven't been winning in the recent past is a good start.
