knowing marquette's history of stupidity i doubt it, they'll probably be in a circle jerk for awhile over how great this new name is and keep it.

Just heard it on WTMJ, Gold is now abandoned, a special committee will be formed to decide on the new name. Warriors reported as not an option. What a bunch or morons, they look like even bigger idiots now. Funny how all the sudden you lose 98% of your donations because of a name change, and you decide maybe you made a mistake. Maybe they should change their names to the Marquette Cash, they can have dollar signs as logos.

I'm telling you it's the New Coke/Old Coke thing. I still think (although I could not care less) that Warriors will be back.
GO PANTHERS! Now there's a nickname.

Another New Marquette Nickname To Be Decided By Internet Vote Warriors Won't Be A Possibility
POSTED: 9:25 am CDT May 11, 2005 on milwaukeechannel.com UPDATED: 1:39 pm CDT May 11, 2005
MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University Board of Trustees decided Wednesday that an Internet vote by alumni, faculty and students will be conduced on changing the team's nickname.
University President Father Robert Wild said they'll be able to pick from 10 names, but Warriors won't be among them.
School officials will pick those names.
A date has not yet been scheduled, but it is planned soon.
Board Chairman John Bergstrom said no one anticipated the strong opposition voiced after the trustees voted last week to change the nickname from Golden Eagles to Gold.
Alumni urged the school a year ago to go back to Warriors, its nickname during a golden run that saw it win the NCAA men's basketball championship in 1977 under legendary coach Al McGuire.
The Jesuit university became the Warriors in 1954, but abandoned the name and logo, one of which featured a profile of an American Indian wearing a headdress, because the imagery and a past mascot had offended some Indian groups.

why don't they make the warrior logo a symbol of a Roman soldier or something non-Indian related? i always did like the "Lightning" as a nickname and it was a finalist back in the 90s. the Marquette Carp would be appropriate since they'll be the bottom feeders of the Big East.

why don't they make the warrior logo a symbol of a Roman soldier or something non-Indian related? The Golden State Warriors and their logo works for them.

wow, talk about complete loss of credibility. what an embarassment. Yes, it is odd...but nothing would have been a bigger embarrassment than heading into the Big East with that nickname. 6 months from now, this will have been the correct decision to make. They realized they messed up.

I think this was the plan all along.
Make up a name so ridiculous, that no matter what they choose, they know that people will be happy, because, "at least it's not GOLD" And the debate over Warriors will be dead forever.
So we may think they are fools, but... people don't get to to be CEO's of Fortune 500 companies and members of the board of trustees at Marquette by being idiots. These are smart people. I suggest that they knew exactly what they they were/are doing.

It is amazing how much money talks at Marquette...I think this was the plan becasue now all those people who said that the Golden Eagles was a bad name, will not openly embrace it opposed to the "GOLD"....either way if they dont go back to the golden eagles it will be there 4th nickname in11 th years...sounds like a university with some real convictions
