I thought there were more fans Thursday than last night. Overall, I'm still disappointed about the attendance though. I expect more support for a first-place team, especially with no other major games/teams from the state playing last night. The students must do better as well. We can't keep making excuses about the students being gone because of the break. I've watched a lot of games in the last few weeks on tv with students at games, while their school is on break. On a positive note, it was nice to see the Party Deck jammed pack.

Unfortunately, like I’ve been saying is unless we continue to stack W after W after W in the coming weeks, we won’t see a huge increase there. I’d love to be wrong, but we just do not have students that love basketball. It was a tie game after we came back from down 40-56 with 12 minutes to play, and most of them were sitting down for the final play of regulation. Screw that, when I told them to stand up they acted like I was some sort of idiot. I say we try Jimmy’s idea to get the seats removed from the student section so people are forced to be engaged in the game. The fact that people didn’t care enough to stand or cheer in that scenario is just blasphemy…

I was a student years ago attending games at Baker Field House with its dirt floor; there is something unique about this university. It has always been very real. I like that. Sports add value to our lives. It is entertainment and distraction. Some can make a living participating in this endeavor, as a vendor, Coach, trainer, professional, whatever. Winning can become a drug. I look at the students at Marquette games lined up in rows and think of robots. I feel the same way about the students at Purdue, Wisconsin, Duke, and wherever Sport becomes more than what it really is. The fans at UWM are passionate in their own way. I like the fact that UWM students and fans are real. I was standing at the end of the game hoping for a W. It didn’t happen but it was a heck of a game. Neither team deserved to lose but someone always does. I hate to lose but just wait for the next game. Keep going to games like l have for over 50 years. It keeps me engaged with my university and city that I love.

Right now, let's embrace the quality of the crowd - excitement, enthusiasm, passion. That is something that has returned after way too long of an absence.
Keep that up and the quantity will follow.

Not trying to be a downer, but the casual fans have never really shown up until the team has some hype behind them since the early 2000s. Yes, we are getting some local media attention which is really good (and I hope that keeps going) but I would bet most casual fans would still think we are bad with the 5 or so years of PBS years. Many I bet would not even know who Bart is and how we are doing until they see things on their local news. The fans will come, just keep winning...unfortunately it takes time especially in a city dominated by the Illinois MU and Bucks.

Also, it is quite unfortunate that the HL has gotten rid of the 1 seed hosting as that brought a bunch of attention too. When I was in school in the 2010s, some of the most hype and student attendance/hype was when we hosted in 2011. We had to get to the doors 3 hours early just to get our normal front row student spot and the whole section was packed full. The VALPO/MKE semi game was some of the most fun I had in the student section and the Cell was rocking.

RELAVANCE To re-establish it, the public perception needs to be that the team is a winner. Of course, that will require actual winning on a consistent basis. It will also require positive promotion by the coach, athletic department and fans. The latest episode of "cry wolf" because of the PBJ fiasco makes re-establishment even more of a challenge. Most likely, that is still fresh in the minds of the general public. We are heading in the right direction with a winner, Bart Lundy, at the helm. Those of use who have been around for a while have seen it before, it can happen again.

Candidates for fewer minutes: Johnson, Miskiewicz, Baker and Stuart. Let's get Bol and Jamison some more time!

I agree on #20 he plays 3 mins to the start the game the last few games .....maybe 3 mins to begin the second half after that he just sits. Very strange only Lundy can explain You can tell he does not fit this system and yet Lundy didnt cut him early to go find a diff team that he probably would be playing more minutes for and contribute. Yeah he's a big but his previous team ,which was d2, they played a half court set (PNW) which is why he excelled in. Averaged a double double. I know its D2 but its still double double in the books. Just my two cents. Go Panthers!

Only one subscriber comment linked to the WSU game story on JS Online. Most of you will agree it is like fingernails on a chalkboard:
Daniel M - "Lundy is a really great coach. Would like to see him at UW someday."
Screech!

I feel the need to defend the students this time...
I was sitting in 224 with Ken and Jimmy/Mrs. Jimmy, and there were numerous students sitting in the 300 level sections behind us. As someone mentioned in a previous game thread, they are around but don't necessarily seat themselves in the traditional area we mostly did. So, there were more there than you saw.

One guy at the front telling people what to do doesn't work. You've gotta talk to them and get them engaged. Let's talk on Thursday at the game or after at Goolsby's. They need to see the student section as something they want to be a part of. I don't like how far the student section is from the action now. We used to start two feet behind the cheerleaders, right on the floor. Having the first row raised doesn't help.

We're completely snowballing people now. IDK, it is probably more a reflection of how inflated announced attendance used to be than anything else. The announced totals this week probably reflect the true paid attendance. It would be nice to hear from Chris Zills regarding this issue. I can chime in here and provide some perspective since I am the one that determines the number. First off, we do not inflate the attendance number and haven't in the five seasons that I have been here. I cannot speak to what was done prior to that. The announced attendance number is primarily the number of tickets out/distributed. The issue that we are seeing particularly on Saturday is that while the tickets out/distributed number isn't that much higher than previous games, people are actually using their tickets. We had a 13% increase in people using their tickets/actually in the buidling on Saturday over what our average had been for the previous games at Panther Arena this year. I hope that helps. Let me know.
