In today's installment of "Meet the Division 1 schools," we take a look at ... UC San Diego! City: San Diego. Enrollment: 41,885. Nickname: Tritons. Conference: Big West. Setting. Urban. Ranking: 34th out of 443 schools in the country by Best Colleges & National Universities and No. 6 public university in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Joined Division 1 on July 1, 2020. Famous sports alumni: Billy Beane, executive vice president, Oakland Athletics, the subject of Moneyball, an evolutionary analytics-based approach to baseball. One of 26 D-1 schools in the state of California. UC San Diego cannot refer to itself as San Diego for branding purposes. The University of San Diego of the WCC already has dibs on that. The UC schools love having that UC in the name. It gives the distinction of being a school of higher academic standing than the other state schools. (Typically).
