We are fortunate that the Horizon League has had longstanding live-game exposure on ESPN+. In comparison, Summit League games are all over the place and the WAC had an awful video app prior to this past season.
Many of the game telecasts in the Horizon League are very good. It seems that Milwaukee's lags behind a bit. General sports fans watching a Panther basketball game on ESPN+ or the rare over-the-air broadcast likely perceive the TV production to be second rate. One way to raise the program profile is to improve the telecasts so they provide a viewer experience more closely aligned with a power conference team's game.
I know there could be some hefty costs involved here, so we cannot expect a complete upgrade. However, perhaps some tweaks could be made to improve what is already offered.
I'd like to have a full time analyst join Scott Warras on the radio broadcast and have it simulcasted on the telecasts. Cleveland State has done this for years with Al Pawlowski on play by play and a quality analyst. A little homerism would be OK, although within the confines of fairness to the opposition in light of the likelihood the opposing team's fan make up the majority of the streaming telecast audience. Joah Tucker was outstanding in his two My24 games this year, especially for someone with no experience. Adrian Tigert was good in his time as a TV analyst and postgame radio show co-host.
I have nothing against Wayne Larrivee, but his work on ESPN+ telecasts this season seemed redundant and added little value. Use whatever is paid to him to help fund the analyst's pay.
There is also significant room for improvement on the TV production side. Ideally, no more dizzy-inducing camera pans and better graphics. A fancam would also be great. I realize this costs more money and funding it would be a challenge. Maybe winning can bring in advertising revenue (was there any external advertising last year???) which could help with this.
There is so much more, like a sideline reporter. But that and many other things would be asking for too much so soon.
Your thoughts?
