The discussion:
While the Black and Gold Club proposal cannot and will not put up specific candidates for the university to consider, I want there to be a thread where people can suggest candidates they think would be good for the position of head coach of the Milwaukee Panthers
I'll put up a couple names: Jason Shay, Duffy Conroy and Paul Mills. Shay's exit from ETSU was for the most bullsh*t of reasons (supporting his players' right to speak up on political issues).
Duffy is an assistant coach we all know who knows and understands the situation at Milwaukee and nearly won the NIT as the lead assistant of Eric Konkol's staff at Louisiana Tech. He'd also likely be a less expensive option than the next coach, Paul Mills.
Paul Mills is Oral Roberts' head coach, having just taken ORU to the Sweet Sixteen in his fourth season at the school. He inherited an 8-win team and after two 11-win rebuilding years turned them up to 17 and then 18 wins last season on the way to the biggest postseason success the Summit League has had since Valpo in 1998. He would probably be more expensive than most other candidates, especially given our well-known issues with administration.

Well I said I had a candidate in mind so this is the perfect thread for it.
The first name on my list is Ben McCollum. He’s the HC of (D2) Northwest Missouri State. In his 12 years there:
He’s won 4 NABC D2 Coach of the year awards. All 4 have been since 2017.
He’s won 3 D2 national championships, all since 2017, and has a 23-5 D2 tournament record.
He’s won 9 regular season titles and 5 conference tournament titles.
He’s done all this by his 40th birthday.
The only potential drawback (other than his potential lack of interest) is he has barely recruited outside of Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska as he’s only had a handful of recruits from Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota over his entire tenure. ———————————————————————————————————
My probable fourth choice (yes, McCollum would be my top 3) is Saul Phillips. He’s been at Northern State (D2) the last few years and has been successful albeit nowhere near as successful as McCollum. He’s gone 51-11 (including games this season), won 2 division titles and two conference tournament championships.
My concern with him is he inherited a talented team and only started suffering from the transfer portal this past offseason. How will he be able to reload?

Bingo! I'd pursue McCollum in a heartbeat. He checks most of the boxes. I'd prefer a more fiery personality, but even that is not bad. Here is an example youtu.be/5_g6A5VJl4MHire an assistant with good recruiting ability in the upper Midwest and we would be good to go

I like McCollum's resume a lot!
Wouldn't hiring Saul Phillips basically be an admission that letting Jeter go was a mistake? I would say so. You're going back to the same Bo Ryan well a third time. I wouldn't have an issue with it were it to happen, but the anti-Jeter crowd may.
If we're suggesting reclamation projects, I'd like to suggest Steve Prohm. His mid-major success speaks for itself.

People will perceive whatever they want regardless so I don’t really care. I was part of the anti-Jeter crowd at the end but if Phillips can come in and right the ship, I don’t really care. Prohm would be a great hire too.

My choices would be McCollum, Shacka Smart quoted as saying his team performs at a high level. Considered them a top 100 team in country. My next choice is Dan Weisse former Panther who follows both Bo Ryan and Bruce Pearl styles of coaching. His dad was a coach as well . 41 years of age who knows Wisconsin and Minnesota players.

Completely agree with the McCollum suggestion. First name that came to mind when I saw the thread. There was a great profile about him in The Athletic ($) a few months ago (https://theathletic.com/2798730/2021/09/01/meet-ben-mccollum-the-division-ii-coach-winning-titles-and-turning-heads-across-college-basketball/) and he has been at the top of my Panther wishlist since.
Another name I've thought about is Bruce Weber. Obviously he would need to be fired first and I'm not sure it's even a realistic possibility, but I wonder if he'd have any interest as sort of a last chapter of his career. I have a hard time seeing him getting another P6 job at this point.
I doubt there'd be interest on either side as long as AB is in charge, but Sharif Chambliss is another guy I'd consider.

As nice of a story the hiring of Bruce Weber would be, I would not go that route. See Rollie Massimino at Cleveland State. I like the idea of a young coach who is so naive he thinks he can win a championship anywhere.

You can say many things about AB and I can say plenty, but one thing I've never seen from her is a penchant for holding grudges. I don't think the Jeter stuff was ever personal. It was all business. If Sharif applies and she thinks he's the best for the job, she'll hire him (if Mone doesn't have anything to say). I will say that this is 100% speculation on my part, but I think that the reason Lovell chose to go with Braun over Plinske (in addition to whatever was promised to him in that eleventh-hour phone call from the senator) was because at the time they were pinching every possible penny they could and Rob Jeter was second in the HL only to Gary Waters in salary after Stevens left Butler (of course Butler itself was gone by then). I think Amanda was willing to do whatever to get Jeter gone and Plinske wasn't willing to make any kind of promise of the sort. Again, that's 100% speculation on my part. I just know how people such as that f***ing douchebag Allen Lee were like whenever athletics would come across their plate. They'd immediately complain about how much the basketball coach makes. And where are we now? Paying a guy $350k to be 1/10th the coach Rob Jeter was. So when we're making our recommendation to the university on what we prefer in the next men's basketball coach, we may want to lean toward including coach compensation.

Depending on if they're willing to keep up with salaries of recent hires, I'd call Eric Henderson and potentially Lamont Paris (depending on how this year plays out...and on if his extension in 2019 kept his salary the same) and........realistically, get them raises.

I think the problem with Lamont is that he hasn't been able to dominate the SoCon, so a lot of people here will look at his conference standing year-to-year and they'll think he's Jeter 2.0.

That's why I wanna see how this year plays out. If Chattanooga keeps this up, he will have pulled off the complete rebuild that started on his first day on the job(but in that case, could have bigger programs calling)

He'd essentially be what we keep hiring. Conroy's resume is nowhere near our former assistant coach hires that have had OK to terrible results... Outside of the fluke run last year, Mills hasn't been all that great...and that's with some INSANE talent at the top of the roster. You'd basically need him to go find another Max Abmas, and I think that's INSANELY unlikely.

As a "UWM guy" candidate, former Panther and current Grambling St. Head Coach Donte Jackson.
66-64 at a school that is historically terrible in basketball, and clearly he can recruit Milwaukee, because he has 6 Milwaukee kids on his roster right now.

I might have a new favorite candidate after Tuesday (ok, ok...they'll probably figure something out, but what if?)
