Many have said if this don't improve. Are they even bad? Is this overblown?

I don't think anyone should realistically expect any live sports, particularly any live sports that allow fan attendance, until mid-summer at the earliest. Even that will require an immense commitment by the citizenry before then to social distancing and other preventative measures, an enormous effort by the pharma companies to produce and supply testing kits by the millions, a similarly enormous effort by the health/medical/hospital community to prepare their facilities for potentially tens of thousands of acute patients and a complete turnaround in the competence and clarity of the federal response. And some luck -- hoping that the virus has some "seasonality" component that makes it less virulent and/or transmittable in warmer weather.
I read a comment by an epidemiologist today saying that if it all turns out better than we fear and everyone ends up saying "see, it was overblown" -- it will be because the health community has been working madly behind the scenes. I agree with that, but in truth we are all in this together. Everyone needs to do what they can, even if it's "just" washing their hands a lot.

If you haven't seen it, this graphic illuminates the most cogent explanation for the threat of this virus. The infectious disease specialists cannot right now accurately state the mortality (death) rate from infection because the data is still limited (especially in the US, because of the terrible testing problems described in the Congressional testimony yesterday by Dr. Fauci and others). But even if it is "only" as deadly as the seasonal flu, the problem is that it would be an ADDITIONAL burden on a health system that does not have elastic capacity. Think of it this way: if your community has 10 ICU beds (and the doctors/nurses/technology to support 10 beds, but no more), and ordinarily seven are occupied by patients with the "ordinary" illnesses that circulate through the population, a new disease that suddenly adds four or five additional patients creates a capacity crisis. This is what has happened in Northern Italy, which is why we are hearing horrific reports that doctors are now forced to "triage" -- which means they must choose which patients get the beds, and which don't. Which actually means: which patients will die. The chart above shows what happens to the number of patients who need that life-saving treatment depending on whether immediate preventative measures are taken (such as compliant social distancing, quarantining, testing, etc.) -- or whether they are not taken. It's pretty simple, and pretty scary. That's why the "it's no worse than the flu" argument completely misses the point.

It's a "dammed if you do, dammed if you don't" scenario. We hate having our routine/schedule compromised but if we carry on like normal and things get significantly worse, we'll blame those who didn't stop it earlier.
I'll dedicating my newfound free time to unprecedented levels of spring cleaning.

Many have said if this don't improve. Are they even bad? Is this overblown? 3 weeks ago, Europe was minimally impacted. Today, WHO has deemed it the epicenter of the pandemic.

Cleveland State women's basketball coach Chris Kielsmeier has tested positive for the coronavirus, the school announced Saturday night.

Shopping yesterday, there was no social distancing. And there were definitely more than 250 people at Walmart.

I see good data both sides of this. Doctors on TV saying different things. So, who the f*** knows. Something we always should have been doing is wash your hands! Many f***ers going stupid crazy at the stores. I guess we will see one way or another. Grab your popcorn.

Obviously it's difficult to definitively handle a problem when it's never existed before and you're learning more info about it every single day. It was reported two days ago that some patients in Hong Kong who recovered were found to have suffered organ damage from the illness. Japan is the first country to have patients relapse. Not saying either will happen here but we just don't know yet. The only thing I definitely know is I'm happy for my friend who closed his bar at the end of February. He couldn't have timed that any better!

This just in:
7:28 p.m. CDC says Americans should cancel all gatherings of 50 people or more for the next eight weeks
Federal health officials on Sunday said Americans should cancel or postpone events involving 50 or more people for the next eight weeks throughout the United States.
“Large events and mass gatherings can contribute to the spread of COVID-19,” the illness caused by the coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted in a statement on its website. “Examples … include conferences, festivals, parades, concerts, sporting events, weddings.”
If followed, the guidance — the strongest and most sweeping to date from the CDC — is certain to upend and reshape American life for the next two months.
_______
Not that it matters much compared to what we are facing, but it's now obvious that baseball, basketball, etc. will be closed down until at least June.

Mass gatherings can contribute to the spread of COVID-19. Shopping at a big box store is the most uncontrolled mass gathering there is. Walmart is probably the new ground zero for the spread of the coronavirus.
