I will add that Western is a tough gig, as the Leathernecks have registered only three 20-win seasons in their 39-year Division 1 history (82-83, 94-95 & 12-13).

That's that sh*t I do like. If Rob gets hired, good luck to him. But it seems to be a grab at whatever head coaching job is available. WIU is terrible. Mediocre at best as a university, what keeps it from being the most infamous party school in the state is Southern, which is legendary. But at least SIU has had some athletic success, particularly in basketball. WIU was one of the four teams left behind in what became the Summit League when most of it, UWM included, moved to what is now the Horizon. The other three have since left. Eastern Illinois went to the Ohio Valley where they can play football, Valpo dominated the conference for a while before moving to the Horizon and since the Valley, and Youngstown State eventually moved into the HL basement. WIU has remained in the Summit and continued to suck. People here complain about the decline in the HL. The Summit is a step down, with longer trips to places where nobody lives, and Western is comfortably ensconced in last place.

Jeff Goodman anonymously polled Summit League coaches (assistants included) about ranking the conference's jobs from best to worst. Not only did WIU come in last, convincingly, here were comments made by two people: Where they win: “You can get anyone into school, so you may as well just take JUCO kids. Other than that, it blows.” – Summit assistant coach Where they lose: “It’s by far the worst job in the league, and it’s probably the worst D-1 college town in America.” – Summit head coach The only real hope they have is a newer AD so there could be a greater drive for improvement. Money will be tough considering all payouts from the NCAA will be less this year because of the tournament being canceled.

TBH, I strongly suspect there might be a greater drive for improvement...I had been saying it for awhile that WIU is a job I'd like to see him in the running for if Pitino Jr. got fired. Once he didn't, I thought it was over as I'm pretty sure Jeter's making 100K+ more at Minnesota than Billy Wright did as HC at WIU. We might have a UIC-throwing-out-500K situation on our hands. Or else they're gonna wind up too far apart financially and I *didn't* speak this into existence. Which would suck. But if he gets the job, one of the reasons I actually think he would be a great fit is that if you throw out all our "3-star" recruits Jeter's recruiting was actually a lot more successful. In a weird way I think having to scour the earth for the next Tiby or Eayrs might work out better than having a shot at the next Tim Flowers (or to present the other end of that) Deonte Roberts)

Billy Wright made $132k last year which was $6k more than what he earned for the ‘16-‘17 season. Can they afford to bump up his pay, the assistant pool AND the recruiting budget?

Best of luck to Rob. Bluntly, he deserves this chance. ANY 20-win seasons at Western would have to be considered a MAJOR victory!

I would of waited it out for just about any other job in the country. He must of really wanted to run a program again and I respect that. Congrats on the gig Coach Jeter!

Could he wait? Was the phone even ringing by other schools?

Probably not. The schools I saw him as a potential fit for (SIU-E and UMKC) just made hires. Could've seen him in the mix at EIU, but that's not all that different.

Of the places I've seen mentioned, this was by far the best fit for Rob from a recruiting standpoint.

Within the first year after he was hired at Milwaukee, Rob Jeter commented in a radio interview about certain recruits being good for Milwaukee's "level." At that time we were in the back end of what we now fondly think of as the program's glory days. It was discouraging to hear him imply he did not consider the program to have the mid-major prominence that pundits and so many of us perceived at that time. I remember discussing this concern with fellow fans, including some on this board, at the time he made the comment and afterward.
Perhaps now at WIU he will be at a "level" appropriate for him. Sure, Milwaukee is now at the same "level," but it certainly was not at the time Bud Haidet made the big mistake of hiring and retaining him.
Perhaps Milwaukee can add WIU to the home schedule in the near future. Attendance is sure to increase by 20 or so for that game (insert comment here about the large percentage increase that would be).
