• NKU has been stingy on the defensive end, holding teams to 65.3 points per game, and makes its hay with the nation's 14th-best 3-point field-goal shooting defense, limiting foes to just 26.7 percent.
• The Norse have ripped off 106 steals so far, a total that ranks 39th in the nation. The team's 8.8 steals per game also rank 38th.
• Offensively, the Norse are letting it rain from long range this year. The team ranks 37th in the country in 3-point field-goal attempts (329) and 55th in made threes (110).
• NKU is in the first year of the Darrin Horn era, as the Kentucky native is just the sixth head coach in the 49th season of the program. In his 10th year as a head coach, Horn has a career record of 179-115.

After a disappointing non-conference season, we'll learn more today about what this team is made of.

It's pretty obvious by now what the team is made of. The only relevant question now is "what is the league made of?" By all indications the league is worse than it has ever been, at least since the turn of the century. Anything less than a winning record for the Panthers in this league would be calamitous. To do that, the team needs to beat some teams that the odds say it shouldn't beat. The "good" news is that the best teams in this league aren't good at all compared to what they were 5, 10, 15 years ago. The separation between the best teams (WSU/NKU) and the teams just above the garbage level of DM, CS and IUPUI is not very large. That's where we sit right now -- just above the garbage level. Let's see which direction we go from there.
Here's kenpom's take as league play begins:

Going 5 in a half minutes without scoring is not ideal.

This team is not good. Not sure what they are running on offense without Roy. Too many bad 3pt. attempts.

Is it Te'Jon Lucas or Lewis? I'm beginning to think that it's Lewis!

I think we've done a very good job on defense.Would like to see more adjustments on offense coming out of the half. We've had some bad luck so far too. It is so nice not having to face Drew McDonald though.
Also, schools should not be allowed to have 3 separate 3 point lines on the court.

This team is not good. Not sure what they are running on offense without Roy. Too many bad 3pt. attempts. The team is playing hard, but the lack of offensive flow reminds me of the Cobb Era.

Is it Te'Jon Lucas or Lewis? I'm beginning to think that it's Lewis! You mean the guy passing the ball to Abrams? This team is so disappointing. They showed they could play with Kansas and Wisconsin for good portions of those games, but they are being outplayed and outhustled so far today. With the lack of production from our bigs, our jump shooting has to be superior to have a chance in a lot of these games. It just isn’t happening enough this year.

Down 7 at half, all things considered it could be worse.

In a game where the offensive rebounds are killing us, why is Amir Allen sitting on the bench?
