A badly constructed team. Counsell didn’t cause that but he didn’t manage the roster he was given very well either. His devotion to algorithmic baseball led to an absolutely insane amount of lineup tinkering.
Unfortunately it will be tough to finance any dramatic moves in the off season. Perhaps Braun will sign cheap as a DH for one last year. I can’t see any other club paying him a bundle with his injury issues at his age. There’s good young pitching although they still need another starter. Offensively there’s immense work to do even if Yelich and Hiura bounce back next year.
The field player signings last winter were an outright disaster overall. Players lost compared to players added probably cost the team 8-10 wins in a 60 game “season.”
Overall it was one of the hardest to watch teams I have ever seen. Brought back memories of the Packers under Forrest Gregg and Bart Starr.

Seasons like this past one are why I was actually depressed about the way the 2018 season ended. That year, a championship was on a platter for them and they missed the opportunity. Such opportunities do not come along for most baseball franchises, particularly the low budget ones.
As for the future, the financial effects of this past season and likely next because of Covid raise a lot of unknowns for all franchises and the player market. The upcoming off-season will be as unprecedented as this season was.
Having stated that, in Stearns I trust. He admitted he made mistakes last off-season. That's the first necessary step of a successful recovery. Very low guaranteed salary commitments. Valuable trade chip in Hader. A reasonably good chance Yelich and Huira get their groove back. Cain probably has something left. It will not take much to vastly improve the catching position (Pina's return alone would help that). I'm excited for the '21 season already.

So, the four NL Central teams season ended by not scoring a single run.
