To think the Badgers could have had Tony Bennett. Ah well, just like most things with UW athletics, Gard is "good enough".
2002, Bo Ryan takes the UW job and retains Tony Bennett as an assistant coach 2003, Dick Bennett takes Washington State job, Tony joins as assistant 2006, Tony takes over as HC at Wazzou 2009, Tony takes Virginia HC job 2014-15-16 Tony either wins the ACC or the ACC tournament or gets a 1 or 2 seed in the NCAA or all of the above 2014-15 Bo takes Badgers to FF and Champ game to cap 14 consecutive NCAA bids as coach 2016, Bo retires, Greg Gard named interim HC, then hired as HC after taking team to Sweet Sixteen (which he repeats in 17)
At what point, exactly, was it possible that the Badgers "could have had Tony Bennett?" That's pure fantasy, unless you think they should have fired the most successful Badger coach ever in either '03, '06 or '09 to make a play for him. Because once Tony got the Virginia job he was set, and at the point when Bo retired, he was already wildly successful with the Hoos. Unless he goes to the NBA at some point, that's where he's staying.
Meanwhile, Gard is already recognized as one of the best coaches in the country. Like Dick and Tony and Bo he's a program builder. Wisconsin is in very good hands with him.
"She would constantly try to throw [Coach Jeter] off and create distractions," said another source who worked in the athletic department and no longer is at UWM. "All the time. It was bad. I felt bad for him all the time. I told him, 'You're a bigger man than I am.' It was brutal. Sabotage was in the cards." -- From the JS story, March 17, 2016
