Who closes next year: Knebel, Black or perhaps Pomeranz? Hader is a one-trick pony that everyone has figured out.

This was what many in Milwaukee felt at 10pm last night.

Everyone would take Hader for two innings with a 2 run lead. The 2018 Hader? In a heartbeat. The 2019 Hader? Not so much. I can’t fault Counsel’s managerial calls on position players, except for sending Hiura down to give Shaw another chance. I wish Counsel had a better track record on handling pitching, though.

Great post, 'Heap. Just one quibble: I'm sure the decision to send down Hiura and recall Shaw would have been made by Stearns or at least CC in consultation with his GM.

I don’t think Hader is terrible. But he didn’t perform in 2019 to his 2018 level.
Maybe it wasn’t reasonable to hope that he would. Sooner or later, hitters were going to adjust. Add to that the simple fact that the 2018 bullpen had other options, so that management didn’t have to rely on him in the same way that they did in 2019.
One hopes the Hader is driven to improve himself, and will, with help from the coaching staff, find ways to reassert himself on the mound.

We are still talking about an All-Star with 37 saves.

And several blown saves, lately at particularly bad times.
That’s the difference between Hader in 2018 and Hader in 2019.
He’s young. He can get better, and yes he’s building on a strong foundation. But when it counted last night, he couldn’t do what a pitcher is supposed to do. I think Counsel should have realised what was up and got someone else in.

Counsel better have not. He didn't give up a run until that hit. You run with your stud. If by lately is that freak hit on Saturday. Let's not play Monday morning quarterback.

In my humble opinion, the biggest issue last night -- and I realize that this was the game plan all along -- was asking Hader to go two full innings.

What would have been the difference if it was the 9th inning. Hader didn't fail pitching in two innings of work. We never got to that point.

Well, what would they have done in the 9th after he threw 30-plus pitches in the 8th? What was the plan? Not after the fact, but BEFORE it?
