Milwaukee closed ou its five game homestead with a closely played four set victory over Wright State, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, and 25-23. The win was the Panthers fourth consecutive victory; they were 4-1 over the homestead. The win, coupled with a four set loss to Green Bay by NKU, gave the Panthers sole possession of fourth place in the league.
Of late, the Panthers have been getting balanced scoring, which makes them harder to defend. Today only two Panthers made it to double figures in kills, Carmen Heilemann with 17 and Shanon Volpls with 15. The next highest totals were six each by Abby Koenen and Jenna Miller.
The Panthers led for most of set one, as the Raiders managed to get short-lived leads a couple of times during the set. Leading 22-20, the Panthers finished the set on kills by Volpis, Koenen, and block by Koenen and Miller.
Milwaukee got out to leads of 4-0 and then 7-3 in set two, only to see the Raiders score 10 of the next 12 points to take a 12-9 lead, a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the set. After a kill by Volpis and a block by Volpis and Koenen cut the lead the 23-21, the Raiders got the last two points of the set on kills to even the match.
The beginning of set three was a reversal of set two. The Raiders finished a 5-0 start to the set with a timeout, prompting a timeout call from Coach Johnsson, which stopped the Raider momentum. The Raiders gave the Panthers a point on a service error, and Kyle Wilks rotated to serve. She served the Panthers to three consecutive points, two of them on consecutive service aces. Volpis started another scoring run with a kill, then included an ace of her own in a three point run which gave the Panthers their first lead of the set at 7-6. A Kiekhofer kill and a Jenn Dore service ace extended the lead to 9-7. After Wright State tied the score at 10-all, the Panther offense really got going and built a lead which peaked at eight points at 24-16, giving the Panthers eight set points. The Raiders did get three consecutive points before the Panthers finished the set. It's been a long time since the Pahthers have scored five points on aces in a set, I am sure, and those points were instrumental in securing the set win.
The fourth set was very close. The teams largely traded points early, with the Panther maintaining a two-to-three point lead at 19-16. Wright State then went on a four point run to take a lead, which the Panthers disrupted with a timeout. A three point run put the Panthers on top at 22-20, but the Raiders fought hard to keep the score close, tying it at 22-all. Kills by Kiefhofer and Miller brought the Panthers to match point, and a Wilks kill finished matters. It was Wilks second kill of the match in 26 attempts, but it was an important point.
The Panthers have six regular season matches left; five of those will be played on the road. The next three matches are against teams behind the Panthers in the standings: road matches at Oakland and Youngstown State and Milwaukee's lone home match is against IUPUI on November 2nd. The Panthers then finsish the season with a tough road trip against the teams currently ahead of them in the standings: Cleveland State, UIC and Green Bay.
