From GM's site after his commitment: DeAndre Abram (Carrollton, Texas/Creekview High School) 6'7” Guard The 2015 District 11-5A Offensive Player of the Year, Abram was also tabbed All-Region 2-5A and Team MVP after helping lead Creekview to its first playoff win in 12 years after averaging 16.9 points per game. A 6'7” guard, the Texas native scored a career-high 29 points in December against McKinney and less than a month later hit two triples, including the game-winner at the buzzer, to defeat crosstown rival Carrollton Newman Smith. A team captain his junior season, Abram was named First Team All-District 10-4A and Co-MVP. Twice-named the Student of the Week at Creekview, Abram also earned the Crimson Honor for Junior Representative for PTSA twice. From another website: What they’re saying about DeAndre Abram – Sam Lowe/Great American Shootout: “He’s a late bloomer. He kinda exploded on the recruiting scene his senior year. He can shoot it, slash and get to the rim and finish around the goal. He’s probably a little lean still and needs to put on some weight. A couple years of maturing as a player, and he could be pretty good.” www.pickinsplinters.com/2015/10/26/signed-sealed-delivered-george-mason-patriots-2015-16/

Is he eligible right away? Looks like he already sat out a year? Will have to sit out a year because he played in a whole 8 games last year. That sucks.

Will have to sit out a year because he played in a whole 8 games last year. That sucks. Was he hurt last season? Trying to figure that out. From reading the George Mason board it looks like they were all coaches decision. Seems like it wasn't only him who got benched by his coach..

Seems like he was considered a project when entering GMU. They were his only offer coming out of high school. Not sure why the lack of productivity during his sophomore year but having to sit a year and become comfortable with Baldwin's style can't hurt.

Love when we can get a good player to sit and develop. As for his sophomore year, I've seen on a few of GMU boards was that the coaching change was the reason for his dramatic drop in playing time. He had an up and down freshman year as expected from a freshman, but the productivity he had during his freshman year is encouraging.

From today's jonline story ...
Abram first landed on Baldwin's radar while Baldwin was recruiting at Northwestern, and he signed with the Panthers after the coach re-opened contact with him after taking over at UWM.
"We didn't have room there and nothing came about, and I almost let it go when I came here because I thought he was at a different LEVEL from a recruiting standpoint," said Baldwin. "But we stayed persistent with him and got the release, and he committed to us sight unseen because he trusted in what we're doing."
I really wish that PB hadn't gone there ... and I know plenty of others who feel the same way.

I think I get what you're saying in the last part, but after reading the article I think PB was just trying to sell Abram to those who may have been a little skeptical about the signing. I get the point PB was trying to make as far as Abram being on another LEVEL, especially taking in the fact that he was being recruited by a rising Power Conference program in Northwestern.

In his interview with Scaffidi and Bilstadt on WTMJ (see other thread), Coach Baldwin answered a question about competing with MU in recruiting. He pretty much said they do not recruit the same "LEVEL" of players as MU. That was way too Jeteresque for my liking. Ghost of Dylan and I have had several discussions over the years about this very issue.
Why the public display by Coach Baldwin of self defeatism? Whether true or not, he could have expressed more optimism about pursuing some of the same caliber of players. We need to go no further than seeing Sandy Cohen on Green Bay's roster.

Not saying I agree with what he's saying but I get it. Hopefully the talk doesn't continue passed this year. I'd be more concerned if he continued this kind of talk in upcoming years, but right now I get it because we're still in our rebuild and he's possibly looking to keep the expectations as manageable as possible. We have to remember we only won 8 regular season games last year that's not extremely appealing to top recruits, especially with a coach who doesn't have a HC record or even an example of what he wants the program to look like to try and sell the program to top recruits. I get the points you guys are trying to make and I agree with you, just trying to stay optimistic and maybe present an alternative way of looking at the comments. And Sandy Cohen is not the best example he's from the Green Bay area and they were recruiting him since high school.
