Given the length of time between Milwaukee’s loss in the HL tournament and their first round WNIT game, i wasn’t sure how the Panthers would play, especially on the road in a place they had never won a game.
It turned out the answer to that question was, “Really well.” They set a single game record for shooting percentage (.694; the previous record was .643), hit 10 three-point shots, and won 81-67. Northern Iowa, in contrast, shot .364 for the game, a little better than half Milwaukee’s percentage.
Jamie Reit led all scorers with 21 points. She shot 8-12 for the game, 5-8 from distance. The total points and the five made three-pointers were career bests. Reit had plenty of help: Jenny Lindner finished with 19 points (hitting all her shots) even though she spent a lot of the second half on the bench with four fouls. Steph Kostowicz had a big night all around: 13 points (on 6-9 shooting), 12 assists, seven rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. With six minutes left in the fourth quarter, it looked like she might get to 10 or more rebounds and finish with a triple-double, but the Panthers had the game well in hand, and other players were getting rebounds (Lizzie Odegard finished the game with eight rebounds to go with six points). Bailey Farley and McKaela Schmelzer finished with eight points each; Schmelzer also contributed six assists, four rebounds and a steal.
The win made this season’s seniors the winningest class in program history. Another win would give the Panthers 22 for the season, tying the program record.
Their second round game will be against Indiana University in Bloomington on Sunday afternoon. If they can pull off the win, it would be their third win over a Big Ten squad, and all on the road.

2018 Horizon League Women's Post-Season Tournament Update #3Women's Basketball Invitational Round 1: - SUNY Binghamton at Youngstown State, Wednesday, March 14. Binghamton wins, 70-59. YSU led for most of the first half, but Binghamton put it together in the second half and won going away.
Women's NIT Round 1: - Purdue at IUPUI, Thursday March 15th. Purdue wins 48-46. A similar game to the YSU game, but lower scoring. IUPUI led the entire first half, a couple of times by double-digits. Purdue asserted itself in the second half, and took the lead late. IUPUI fought back from a 46-40 deficit to tie the score with 35 seconds left. Purdue scored with six seconds left, and a three-point shot from IUPUI missed as time expired.
- Milwaukee at Northern Iowa, Thursday March 15th. Milwaukee wins, 81-67.
- Wright State at Toledo, Friday March 16th. Toledo wins 64-50. Wright State’s offense averaged 10.67 points per quarter through the first three. Their defense gave up 17 points per quarter over the same stretch. The resulting deficit was too much to overcome.
Women's NCAA Round 1: - Green Bay (7) vs Minnesota (10), Friday March 16th. Minnesota wins 89-77. This game was played at Minnesota’s pace, and in the end Green Bay could not keep up. The Gophers outscored the Phoenix in three of the four quarters, by five in the first and third quarters, but by 17 in the fourth quarter, to pull away.
The Horizon League is 1-4 so far in the post-season.

There's always been a major disparity in talent for women's basketball. It lowers over time but it's still a huge gap. WNIT is a huge accomplishment for Milwaukee right now. Congratulations to Kyle on a successful season, let's take another step and hopefully we can get in position to take that conference crown.

The quality of the players (and therefore the quality of play) has increased dramatically over the years i have been watching the Panther women play. This is true of in-state as well as outof-state players. That’s one reason for hope.
Next year Milwaukee will have the services of Bre Cera after she had the mandatory year off after transferring. She is, according to Coach Rechlicz, a player Milwaukee very much wanted to sign coming out of high school (see the initial posts in this thread). She will be a sophomore, so the Panthers will have her for three years. That’s another hopeful sign.
This year’s senior class leaves as the winningest class in program history. They have definitely contributed to changing the culture of the program, as the Coach is fond of saying. The incoming freshmen sound promising: a mix of heights and skill-sets. The staff has a good foundation to build on.

i did some research on the incoming freshman class for the Panthers next season.
Coach Rechlicz says it's the highest rated class she's had. i don't know who's doing the rating, but the players are impressive.
Sydney Levy and Emma Wittmershaus played key roles on 2018 state champions, Levy at Division 1 Appleton North (back to back state champs in 2017 and 2018) and Wittmershaus at Division 5 Bangor HS. Both made multiple all-state teams. Wittmershaus was WSN's top senior defensive player for 2017-18.
Megan Walstad was part of a Minnesota state champion at Eastview HS in Apple Valley, MN.
Tahlia Walton (Stanley-Boyd HS) got some mentions in all-state teams in Wisconsin.
A sidenote: -Cleveland State Coach Kate Peterson-Abiad is leaving Cleveland State after 15 years and taking a job with the WIAA. She was, i believe, the HL WBB coach with the longest continuous tenure (GB's Kevin Borseth has it in overall seniority, i think, but he was away coaching Michigan for five years). Peterson-Abiad has decided that the responsibilities of being a D1 basketball coach were getting in the way of her family life. Peterson-Abiad gave Kyle Rechlicz a coaching job at one point.
