This was a nice win, breaking a 17 game losing streak that extended back to 1992.
The Badgers are in their first season under a new coach, so a victory by the Panthers, just one year removed from the three consecutive losing seasons that marked Coach Rechliz's first years at building the program, is not a total surprise, but it represents another step forward for the Milwaukee women's program.
The non-league season will be a good indication of how good the team will be this season. The schedule is intended to challenge the team so that they enter league play in high gear.

The latest win, over Vermont to win the tournament, was first game i was able to watch from beginning to end. It was an impressive win in that the Panthers's defense sparked a 15-0 first quarter run, and then minimized any runs that Vermont put together, so that the Panthers gradually built the lead to as high as 26 points in the fourth quarter.
The Panther defense forced 20 turnovers (a +6 margin) which led them to dominate points off turnovers (25-11). The Panthers had 20 offensive rebounds to five for the Catamounts, and outscored Vermont on second chance points 16-4.
Three Panthers scored in double figures, led by freshman Lizzie Odegard with 14 points off the bench, Jenny Lindner with 12 points, and Steph Kostowicz with 10, who had 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double in the Panthers's first six games of the season.
The 5-1 start is the best start by a Milwaukee team since the program played in the NAIA, and is the best current record in the League. Green Bay is 4-1 so far, so no one is crowning the Panthers as league champions, and the Phoenix are still the team to beat. But Milwaukee appears to have picked up where they left off last year.
The next game for the Panthers will be Saturday against North Dakota State (1-5, pending a Tuesday night game).

Coach Rechliz apparently said, in her pre-game interview, that her concern was that ND State had yet to put together a complete game, and that if they did, the Panthers would have their hands full.
ND State put together a pretty good game, leading for much of it. When they went up by seven in the fourth quarter, it seemed like they would win their second game of the season, as i had not seen the production from the Panthers that they had shown in their previous five wins. The Panthers managed to get things together in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter, though, overcoming a five point deficit and taking a lead, which they maintained to the end of the game. It's a good thing when a team can manage to pull out a victory when not playing their best ball.
The Panthers were led by Kostowicz and Lindner with 26 points apiece.
In the next two weeks, Green Bay and Milwaukee will both play Marquette, who also has one loss so far. That should be interesting. Both teams will be visiting MU.

Last night Green Bay beat Marquette by 15 in Milwaukee.
Tonight Milwaukee played Illinois State in Illinois. The Redbirds were 3-4 coming in. The Panthers pulled away in the second half to win by eight.
Four Panther players (Lindstrom, Kostowicz, Lindner, and Odegard) scored in double figures, and a fifth (Ford-Washington) finished with nine points. That's tough to do when the team scores 68 points in total.
Another Panther victory would equal the best start in program history. That next game will be a challenge: the 7-1 Northwestern Wildcats come to Klotsche on Sunday.
Fun fact: blocking shots is part of the Panther defense. Kostowicz has been highly ranked among shot blockers in the league. The Redbirds had 10 blocked shots in the game to only one for the Panthers.

First time UWM has seen its name attached to the prestigious list in its seven-year history of the mid-major poll, but it also marks the first ranking of any kind for the program in its Division I history.

Exciting team to watch, hopefully everybody makes it out to a game or two this year. The game against Northwestern was one of the best games i've watched in person in a long time. Won't be surprised if they find themselves in the tournament this year.

Exciting team to watch, hopefully everybody makes it out to a game or two this year. The game against Northwestern was one of the best games i've watched in person in a long time. Won't be surprised if they find themselves in the tournament this year. So far, Green Bay and Milwaukee are having the best nonconference seasons: the Phoenix are 8-1 and the Panthers are 7-2. Oakland is the only other HL team with a winning record at 5-4. Detroit, which was picked to finish second, is 4-6 so far. After a tough loss Sunday to Northwestern (the Panthers had two tries at tying the score at the end of the fourth quarter but couldn't finish), the Panthers bounced back nicely against a winless and under-stocked Chicago State roster (the Cougars had six players available). The first quarter was fairly even, with the Panthers leading 18-17 at the break. The Panthers dominated the second quarter, 21-7 in scoring, and led 39-24 at the half. Milwaukee pushed the lead to as high as 26 (52-26) midway through the third quarter, and finished the game with a 71-49 victory. Four Panthers scored in double figures: Steph Kostocwicz (12 pts, 10 rebounds for her seventh double double of in ten games), Bailey Farley, Jenny Lindner, and Sierra Ford-Washington with 11. Jaye Two Bears had nine points (3-5 from beyond the arc). Matt Menzl pointed out that the Panthers have had at least three players score in double figures in every game this season. Milwaukee scored 42 of their 71 points in the paint, and had 18 points off 17 CSU turnovers. The last non-conference game for the Panthers will be on Sunday afternoon against Marquette at Marquette.

That other Milwaukee school only beat Bucky by 6. We have to play a lot better than we did tonight, but MU is a very winnable game.
