It should be a good game and I think we should win but Detroit is looking good tonight and taking it to Wright State so far.
EDIT: They collapsed down the stretch and lost by one to Wright State. They blew a 15 point lead.

Points per game is not an indication of either success or quality of play. It's not even a reliable indicator of style. As BPU implies, to determine those things you need to look at tempo, efficiency and differentials.

Not sure I can make this look good as a table but here's the latest kenpom analysis. After the team record, overall and in conference, is the projected conference record. Then the four data sets are overall ranking (by his method), offensive efficiency, defensive efficiency and tempo. This is much more useful data than raw scoring numbers. Valpo is as good as they are because of their exceptional defense (something we saw in our game), currently ranked third in the country. Note that the top three teams in the league use very low tempo approaches, the next three very high tempo approaches. Of the top three teams, Milwaukee imbalances to offense, Valpo and Wright to defense. (Milwaukee is a high scoring team despite its low tempo because of its efficiency, driven by good shooting, effective and plentiful trips to the line, and few turnovers -- essentially it's the Wisconsin method; Detroit and Green Bay score a lot based largely on high tempo; Oakland is both high tempo and efficient, thus it's no surprise they are the highest scoring team.)
As a practical matter it is unusual for a team with either an offensive OR defensive ranking higher than about 50 to make the final four. No such team has won the national title going back to at least 2002. Most national champs have combined rankings that total no more than 20 or so. In Butler's two final game years their o/d rankings were 57/2 and 48/44. In our sweet sixteen year our rankings were 49/44.
Valparaiso 16-3 6-0 17-1 .8912 19 106.4 122 88.6 3 68.0 242 Wright St. 11-8 5-1 12-6 .5639 145 98.1 265 95.9 44 66.9 295 Milwaukee 13-6 4-2 12-6 .6472 108 109.1 60 103.5 188 67.3 278 Green Bay 12-7 4-2 11-7 .6146 120 105.0 139 100.8 131 79.7 2 Oakland 11-8 3-3 9-9 .5606 147 110.3 48 107.9 275 74.9 12 Detroit 9-8 3-3 8-10 .4617 187 107.0 115 108.4 285 76.0 7 Northern Ky 6-11 2-4 7-11 .3813 214 100.8 225 105.1 221 68.3 226 Cleveland St. 7-13 2-5 6-12 .2993 261 96.4 291 103.8 195 65.2 333 Youngstown St. 7-13 2-5 7-11 .2893 264 102.8 177 111.1 323 73.0 42 Ill Chicago 2-15 0-6 2-16 .0942 345 88.7 343 108.0 277 71.3 93
I strongly recommend kenpom. It's the best $20 I spend on college basketball every year.

Snow on the East Coast and Gameday in Milwaukee will be 32 and party sunny! Can't wait! I hope we have a good crowd and people bring kids, since they can get in for a $1.
