If any of you did not see the article in the JS this morning I'm linking it here because I think it's so important. Our faculty is making the point that the UW System is dramatically underfunding Milwaukee compared to Madison in per student support. The numbers are staggering. UW receives about $12,400 per student; Milwaukee receives $5200. Moreover, this support disparity has been going on for years if not decades. Many would say this is not an "apples to apples" comparison. I agree, but as the article points out, Milwaukee, like Madison, is a research institution, but Milwaukee, UNLIKE Madison, is also an ACCESS institution. On what basis is access devalued by the state system? As the article notes, fully 40% of the students of color in the UW System attend Milwaukee, and more Wisconsin residents are educated at Milwaukee than at Madison or any other system University. If these statistics disturb you, I urge you to let your elected officials know that. Let me be clear that I have NOT been asked by anyone to make this request, and I don't even really know anyone on the Faculty. I am simply reacting to the article. Certain numbers speak for themselves. www.jsonline.com/news/education/uw-milwaukee-faculty-group-calls-for-boost-in-campus-funding-b99629983z1-360849461.html
