Very reasonable questions, 'Holic. By the way, when you're in Tampa for a Bucs game you should stop at Brocato's for a Cuban-style sub. Anyway, I would say that the priority for the coming year is a Division 1-ready big who rebounds and plays defense and then a combination guard with D-1 experience who could redshirt and lead the scout team. The D1-ready big would give the Panthers an extremely strong 11-man rotation, with Austin, Matt, Jordan, Akeem and J.J. as the starters and the big transfer, J.R., Cody, Justin, Scotty and JayQuon coming off the bench. As for Goode, he's a project who would benefit greatly from a year at a prep school or a junior college. He reminds me of a player from Dominican that the Panthers recruited a few years ago who was very raw. Was his name David Patten? This pretty much sums it up. It's a very sensitive time for recruiting. Sharing names or hinting at things could harpoon recruiting. Just know the player is pretty great. Sent from my SCH-R970 using proboards

glad to hear his visit went well. i like the fact that he's a hometown product and we would be able to redshirt him his first year and then move him into the backup 4 spot (behind Scotty) and get 4 full years of production after Tiby and JJ leave. add him with the athletic back court of Justin, Jay, and Akeem along with the sharp shooting of Austin and Cody, then with the Prahls in their 3rd year at the 5 spot and this could be a Horizon League Championship team. with all that being said everyone mentioned has to stay but Jeter has been doing a pretty good job recently of keeping a lot of his core together. It cannot be overstated how big it was that Rob Jeter and his staff kept the roster together. These players are hungry and they want to do it together. Sent from my SCH-R970 using proboards

Patten played for Whitefish Bay, Jeter had interest, not sure what happened to him.

Nice landing for the kid and I wish him luck there. I wasn't sold on him being good enough at our level, but he has potential. Anyway, we have two openings right now but no need to reach with the depth and experience on the roster. As dylan has said, if we can bring in one more legit big man who can provide minutes next year, that would be a nice piece to the puzzle. But that's the only "need" you could identify, and even that is only a marginal need.
I couldn't sleep last night and was thinking about the roster for next season. We have certainly had some better players individually over the years, but I'm not sure we have ever had this much legitimate depth, and that includes Pearl's tenure. I spoke with a couple of the coaches last week and they said the guys are getting after it in the gym. There's a lot of hunger. Thinking about the league, Valpo will certainly be dubbed the favorite in the preseason, but after that does anyone else have a roster as good as ours, or as good a group of returning players? I don't think so.

I would use our lone remaining scholarship on a big guy who can contribute right away. are we going up against this mystery big man's hometown team (and our archrival's old coach) for his services?

I don't think so. I've been thinking about the very same thing. I'd first like to get an in-person look at JayQuon McCloud and Jordan Johnson before I make any pronouncements, but I admit that I'm excited about both of them. Valparaiso should be very good next season, but I certainly am not conceding anything to the Crusaders. We should also be very good. Along those lines, it feels like our get-together next Thursday is more a season-opening banquet than a season-ending one.

I think the exciting thing is that JayQuan and Jordan and Brock and Derek aren't coming in to fill open spots -- they are coming in to compete with and complement Akeem and JR and Justin. Scotty isn't coming in and Austin isn't coming back to fill open spots -- they are coming in to compete with and complement JJ, Matt, Cody, Brett, Alex and Dan. Is it October yet? I can't wait to read some Dayton or Cleveland beat writer picking us for 5th in the preseason previews.
