Major roster changes is the story now.
In addition to losing Angela Rodriguez and Kimmee Chandler to graduation, the Panthers have now, apparently lost Bre Warren: she's not on the 2014-15 roster. Avyanna Young's transfer has already been noted.
The current roster lists 12 players, one of whom, Alexis Lindstrom, is sitting out 2014-15 because she is a transfer from Northern Illinois university. i'm guessing that there will be an addition or two before the season starts, because 11 players is rather a thin roster. Detroit played a number of games last season with a depleted roster, and lost nearly all those games. Once they got back to full strength, they were a much better team.
The Panthers will have three senior players, most notably Ashley Green. This will be Green's team. She has by far the most experience, and will be looked on to pick up some of the scoring lost. Macie Dorow is the second returning senior with experience. She has gradually worked herself into more and more playing time, particularly when suspensions and academic troubles depleted the bench last year. The third senior is Hannah Kaul. Women's soccer fans will recognize her as a four-year player for the Panthers. She has experience in playing on a winning team, but i don't know how much basketball she's played.
There are three players in the junior class. Jordyn Swan and Sydney Howard have played significant minutes, although Swan has been hampered by injury. Howard was a good defender, moreso than a scorer. She will have an opportunity to step up offensively. The third junior is a transfer, Jalesa Armstrong, who can play immediately because she sat out last season while enrolled at a junior college in Chicago. Coach Rechliz touts Armstrong as someone who "brings a different game" to the Panther squad. She can, reportedly, both score and distribute. (Alexis Lindstrom will have junior status in 2015-16.)
The only sophomore currently on the roster is Christina Wakeman, a post player. She is very much a work in progress, and at this point a better defender than a scorer.
The incoming freshman class consists of four players: Cree Hammond, Kelsey Cunningham, Jenny Linder and Stephanie Kostowicz. The class is a mix of guards and forwards. Kostowicz is from Oak Creek and played on a state championship squad in high school. All four will probably get a good chance to contribute right away, barring the signing of a truly remarkable player, which would be very unusual at this time of the year.
At this point, i expect 2014-15 will be a repeat of the previous three seasons. The Panthers look as though they will finish toward the bottom of the league, unless this squad gets a lot of players to make rapid and large improvements in their game, and/or a number of other programs in the league take a serious step backward.
